After years of speculation as to what the plot would be of Star Trek Into Darkness, the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel to his blockbuster 2009 reboot, Paramount Pictures has released the film’s official synopsis today.
You can check it out here below.
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
There you have it. This being an Abrams movie you won’t find too many major plot details here, including the identity of whoever the hell Benedict Cumberbatch is playing. I’m assuming he’s the “one man weapon of mass destruction” from the synopsis, but then again I could be wrong. Abrams loves to play around with our expectations before one of his movies is released, but he usually ends up giving us exactly what we were either hoping for or dreading.
It matters little to me who’s playing who. I just want to see another thrilling adventure in the continuing voyages of the starship Enterprise. I just hope this movie isn’t boldly going where too many sequels have gone before.
Star Trek Into Darkness also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, and Peter Weller, and opens on May 17, 2013.
