Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

Marvel is obviously pleased with Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s $300 million global box office gross this past weekend. The film was well-received by fans and critics alike, and now it’s time for the studio to look into the future, far ahead of its upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s May 1, 2015 release. While we have Ant-Man to look forward to, Captain America 3 will be one of the closing chapters of the solo hero films.

Marvel teased the idea of a May 6, 2016 release, and initially scheduled Captain America 3 to open the 2016 summer blockbuster season. Now they confirm that the sequel will indeed debut on that date. Hit the jump to see what the film could be about, plus which other blockbuster tentpole superhero film it could go up against.

First and foremost, this is a scheduled release. Marvel may have a change of heart and reschedule Captain America 3 to a later or earlier date, but honestly, I don’t see that happening any time soon. The studio seems confident enough that it can beat the tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman at the box office.

It would be one of the first times that the two competing comic book companies actually went head-to-head on the same release date. Some actually predict that Warner Bros. may be the first to flinch given that their comic book universe is not as well-established as the MCU. We’ll keep you posted on any changes in the schedule.

As for what the film could be about, well, during the film’s press day, Winter Soldier screenwriters Christopher Markcus and Stephen McFreely described the Captain America 3 storyline in only a few words: “psychotic 1950s Cap.”

If you aren’t familiar with the storyline, then here is a short description from our previous report:

While Cap was on ice in the 1950s, a soldier named William Burnside, who had worshiped the original Cap, had blackmailed the U.S. Government into becoming the new Captain America. There is a complicated history to this, one that involves going into spoiler territory. But he encounters Jack Monroe, who shares his fascination. Together they uncover the files for the Super Soldier serum, and inject the unstable formula into themselves to become the new Captain America and Bucky Barnes.
