The Huntsman: Winter's War trailer image

Universal Pictures has just released the second trailer for The Huntsman: Winter’s War starring Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title character and Charlize Theron, who also returns to reprise her role as Ravenna, the Evil Queen. The film is a prequel and sequel of sorts that is set before and after the events of Snow White And The Huntsman. Trust me, the trailer doesn’t make it exactly clear which one of the two it is. The two will be joined by Emily Blunt, who plays Freya, the Ice Queen and sister of Raveena, and Jessica Chastain, Sara, the Warrior, Eric’s (Hemsworth) lover.

Check out the latest trailer for the film below.

Looking at the trailer, it is as though it was saying “Look, we are channeling Disney’s Frozen and mixing it in with polar bears and hooded evil forces draped in melted golden.” Seeing that the creative team pretty much consists of people who have had experience working on the CGI-effects heavy projects comes as no surprise. But what is surprising is the quality of the CGI effects. They feel and look lazy at best as if no care of effort were put into them.

As aforementioned, it’s not clear when the film takes place, but if you still have a hankering for fantasy epics, then I’m guessing prequel or sequel works for you. It’s been reported that the film takes place after the events of the first film, but the voiceover in the trailer speaks as though the film were a sequel. Which is simply confusing. Regardless, the trailer makes it clear that the mirrored figured warns Ravenna of Freya’s great powers, and that a catastrophic event will unleash it upon the kingdom. When we see said event happen, the kingdom is covered in ice, and it appears that Freya isolates herself from her subjects only to raise children to become her huntsman. Yeah, yeah, it kind of borrows story elements from Frozen. Let’s just hope that there is not an adorably cute snowman waddling around with a tiny flurry floating above his head or any tiny snow figures scurrying around the kingdom.

Directed by first-time director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, The Huntsman: Winter’s War opens in theaters on April 22, 2016. The film also stars Nick Frost, Sam Claflin, and Rob Brydon.

Here is the new updated film synopsis:

Discover the story that came before Snow White in The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles from Snow White and the Huntsman, joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain.

Theron stars as evil Queen Ravenna, who betrays her good sister Freya (Blunt) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed. Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsmen as her protectors, with the only rule that no two of them should ever fall in love.

As a war for domination escalates between the two queens, the hero standing between them is Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Hemsworth). Alongside fellow warrior Sara (Chastain)””the only woman who has ever captured his heart””Eric must help Freya vanquish her sister”¦or Ravenna’s wickedness will rule for eternity.

Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in this breathtaking prequel in the legendary saga that is directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. This spring, find out who will win the war between good and evil in the epic action-adventure The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
