Preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) has agents of God after him. A pair of agents sent from Heaven are here to recapture the light force that has entered him. This force is powerful, and Jesse developed the ability to become very persuasive with his words, such as causing a man to accidentally rip his own heart out, waking a comatose woman, and making drunken Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) dance and sing Johnny Cash. There’s also a strange man from a mysterious meat packing plant looming over the small Texas town of Annville.

Spoilers for this week’s episode of Preacher:

We open with a group of girls from the local brothel running from armed men in a sort of a crazy game a manhunt. You can’t really tell if they’re trying to murder the girls or what, but when Lacey (Barbie Robertson) gets caught she falls through a sewer-drain sized sinkhole.

Cassidy tries to tells Preacher the truth about the cowboys from Heaven and the whole chainsaw fight, kill em twice deal, but Jesse totally blows it off as Cass being Cass. “Is that an apple pipe?” “Yeah but that’s not what this is about!” Gilgun is seriously laugh out loud funny, especially shrouded in sheets and a ridiculous hat, to keep the sun off of his sensitive vampire skin.

They fish Lacey’s body out of the sinkhole and Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley) has some quick words, words that drive Tulip (Ruth Negga) up the wall. When she prods for answers as to why no one is being arrested or even questioned, she gets the answer, “It’s Chinatown.” Jesse meanwhile, is all excited about reviving the church by offering up a flat-screen TV as a raffle. He seems excited to use his powers for good.

Quincannon, the head of O, M, & P, is apparently the leading industrialist in Annville, and doesn’t like other companies trying to move into his territory. When the mayor visits his office and recommends a union between his company and a new one trying to come in, Quincannon literally pisses in the Mayor’s briefcase. The Cowboys from Heaven are awaiting Cassidy, who has promised to return with Preacher so they can sing the force out of him… or chainsaw it out if need be.

The brothel holds a vigil for Lacey, but Tulip loses her cool at the blind chauvinism and indifference of her death. When Clive (Alex Knight) gets cross with her, her temper gets her into trouble and and she knocks him out a window… except it wasn’t Clive, but Cassidy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. There’s glass sticking out of his neck and he’s bleeding profusely as Tulip rushes him to the hospital. The look on his face as she prays for him to be okay is hysterical. When she tries to check him in, he skulks off to the hospital blood bank where she finds him pounding down blood bags.

Everything builds toward Jesse’s big Sunday sermon with a full house. And he promises something huge. After denouncing the entire church for leaving God behind and searching for help from false idols, money, and sex, he tells them he will help them back to the Lord; starting with Mr. Quincannon. He bet Odin that if his sermon didn’t move him back to God, he’d give up his family land that the church is built on. Well Quincannon laughs him off until Jesse commands him to FOLLOW GOD. With everyone watching, Preacher has a convert and faith seems to be restored.

Man, even when nothing happens this show is great. It’s funny because everything in the episode feels like set up for something bigger. Quincannon is definitely going to be some crazy bad guy. Tulip is definitely going to let her bad temper get her in more trouble. The Cowboys are being summoned back to Heaven, and desperately need to get Jesse’s power out of him. And Cassidy is just freaking great. Having no knowledge of the comics, I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what insane directions this show will take.

Preacher returns next Sunday night at 9:00 EST on AMC.
