Batgirl

Last weekend, Nicolas Winding Refn“˜s The Neon Demon opened in a limited number of theaters. While the box office numbers aren’t performing up to expectations based on indie standards, the director is not going to let low numbers keep him from making movies.

While he has been working on mostly smaller films, he is setting his sights on something a little bigger, namely a female superhero movie. According to a new report, Refn wants to direct a Batgirl movie. More on the story below.

In an interview with Business Insider, Refn spoke about how he would like to direct a superhero film. Here’s what he had to say:

“God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun. I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.”

Sounds ambitious, but when asked which superheroine he would like to focus on, he said this:

“I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”

As you recall, Refn attempted to make a Wonder Woman film after Drive was such a sleeper hit. Obviously that never came to fruition, and that job went over to Patty Jenkins. But if he were able to work out a deal between himself and WB, it would be interesting to see whether or not his film would be connected to the current DC Extended Universe. We’ve seen how creative differences could create splits between a director and a studio. It’s happened plenty of times over at Marvel Studios, and at least once when Michelle MacLaren was originally set to direct Wonder Woman. So can someone as creative Refn be able to put away his ego to be a part of a huge studio franchise?

If he does, he will end up having some characters already set up. Although she was cut out of the theatrical version, Jena Malone can be seen playing Barbara Gordon in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Unlimited Edition. And then there’s J.K. Simmons, who will be playing Commissioner James Gordon, her father, in Justice League. Finally, there’s also Ben Affleck, who is Bruce Wayne/Batman, the person who inspired Barbara to take up the mantle of Batgirl. And Refn sounds like he does have a few ideas in mind, of course, he can’t reveal too much considering he doesn’t even have the job yet.

For now, we will just have to wait and see. As of right now, a Batgirl movie isn’t in the cards yet. Audiences haven’t even reacted to Malone as Barbara Gordon, so it’s going to be even harder to gauge if a Batgirl movie is even necessary. But it would sure be fun to see if it does happen. We’ll keep you up to date if there are any updates to this story.
