Arrival Trailer

Paramount has released a new trailer for Denis Villeneuve‘s Arrival starring Amy Adams as a world-renowned linguist who is brought in by the military to help them speak to mysterious aliens that have recently touched down on earth.

The film also stars Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, and Michael Stuhlbarg as the earthlings who will help Adams’ character figure out with the extraterrestrials come in peace or are on Earth for war. Check out the full trailer below.

Based on the trailer alone, this is probably a lot less like the actiony human and alien films we are used to getting and more along the lines of something tense and dramatic. A nice shift in tone that adds to the complexity that is communication. But a bigger question is, how exactly do we trust any of these translations? Not exactly a plot hole, I just think it adds more to the drama and grounds the film in reality, as more people around the world are trying to figure out how to communicate to these new lifeforms.

The film easily caught my eye when the powerful teaser dropped last week. While we didn’t get to see much of the aliens themselves or how they spoke, this international trailer shows teases what they look like and offers a much better look at how they will communicate to humans. We even get to see how Adams’ character attempts to translate their language.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

Arrival lands in theaters November 11.
