Marvel Developing ‘New Warriors’ TV Series Featuring Squirrel Girl

Squirrel Girl

Marvel Studio TV shows have suffered a few setbacks this past season. Agent Carter failed to get renewed for a third season despite a huge show of support from fans, and the spinoff series Marvel’s Most Wanted did not get picked up. With Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. moving on to its fourth season this fall, it’s hard to imagine that Marvel would not continue to grow their TV lineup.

But according to new reports, the studio will now move forward with a new series about the New Warriors featuring Squirrel Girl. More on the story below.

TV Line was the first to report on the news. According to the site, ABC and Marvel are now in the process of shopping the New Warriors in hopes that a distributor will air the series. It’s pretty interesting to see that Disney would not want to air this on Disney Channel, Disney XD, or even the newly found Freeform channel, where Cloak and Dagger is currently being developed. Chances are, it could go to a streaming site, considering how successful Netflix is doing with their gritty Marvel shows. It’s still not clear if Netflix will actually pick it up though. Other streaming site candidates include Hulu and Amazon.

The show is being described as “the junior version of the Avengers.” It should not be confused with the Young Avengers, which featured numerous adolescent characters who typically have connections to established members of Marvel’s primary superhero team, the Avengers.

A few weeks ago, Edgar Wright proposed that Anna Kendrick play the character, although I don’t see that happening now that the character has been relegated to a TV format. Obviously, it is still too early to tell who will be cast considering that the show has just been announced. What’s going to be more interesting is if New Warriors will be connected to the MCU, not that it really matters considering the MCU films never reference what is going on with the TV shows. The two are basically separate entities and are better off coming to terms with that notion.

In the comics, the first team was composed of Firestar, Marvel Boy, Namorita, Nova, and Speedball. Throughout the years the roster had changed in size, gaining and losing members. But the idea of having a “junior version of the Avengers” really sets the tone that this will be something geared towards a younger audience. And the fact that it will be only a half-hour each episode tells us that it will probably stray away from being a heavy drama like some of the other Marvel shows.
