Netflix Review: American: The Bill Hicks Story

Bill Hicks was one of the greatest comedians who ever lived, but he was a lot more than that. Hicks was a writer, musician, philosopher, and an all-knowing soothsayer whose work on and off the stage remains even more relevant now than it did when he died from pancreatic cancer at the young age of 32 in February 1994. Hicks was fearless in his approach to finding humor in the topics that most people found too serious to be taken lightly: drugs, abortion, organized religion, the government, and war. If you listened to his classic bit about the first Iraq War in the early 90’s (which Bill dubbed “the Persian Gulf Distraction”), you could swear he was talking about the recent Iraq War, right down to the name of the President… Bush.

Hicks never desired to become a television or movie star like many of his peers in the stand-up world, preferring to hone his material on the stages of comedy clubs around the world and write novels and screenplays that were never realized. Bill Hicks may be gone from this mortal realm but his legacy will endure for generations to come, and Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is preparing to do his part.

Welcome America, welcome to Bill Hicks. You may have heard of this guy. We have.

And by that I mean we, English.

Not to get on my high-horse about this, but I feel somewhat proud that Bill Hicks adopted the UK as his second home, a place where his comedy seems to fit. His popularity in 1991 was evident at the peak of his career whilst filming for the iconic stand-up tour Revelations at the Dominion Theatre in London. His cynical approach and opinion on current matters and affairs that informed his comedy, cloaked in a riding coat and hat, he grieved that the death of the American Dream became too uncompromising and conflicting for the U.S. He grieved to the English people, the outsiders to the Americans.

And so, after his passing in 1994, his star could have waned. Extinguished and forgotten. He was on the verge of wider success, with interest from British TV in the works, when he fell ill with terminal cancer. But he didn’t, thanks to his effortless comedy stylings and timeless subject matter that still resonates today especially when you tie together the political climate of the late 1980s, early 1990s, and the scary similarity with ol’ Dubya… which has made it’s way online to YouTube… where it has faced new and greater audiences and will continue to do so. I would love to say more on the guy – but I implore you to discover for yourself, his words say enough, and you’ll find out more below…

Continue reading after the jump for an interview with Bill’s brother Steve Hicks.

Russell Crowe Is Bill Hicks? ‘Nottingham’ Delayed?

Bill HicksFlicksNews is reporting that Russell Crowe is apparently set to play Bill Hicks in a biopic of the far-too-young-deceased comedian. Crowe was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald saying, “I have another project based on the life of comedian Bill Hicks, which is going from treatment to draft stage with Kiwi writer Mark Staufer.”

Crowe’s currently spending time at home with his wife and kids while Nottingham is postponed. Apparently filming won’t be starting again until March because director Ridley Scott wants the leaves in Sherwood Forest to be perfect. That, ladies and gentleman, is an artist seeking perfection.

For those who don’t know, Bill Hicks was a hilarious and usually graphic comedian who loved to smoke and drink and piss people off. He was a master of his craft and one of many comedians who died way too young. Hicks died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 32.
