Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: January 18, 2017
Cover Price: $19.99

Matt Kindt does it again with this masterpiece of a story. Dept. H Volume 1: Pressure is first and foremost a crime story. Just because it happens over a half dozen miles beneath the ocean’s surface is purely circumstantial, right? And if it was your father that was killed, would the location be too much for you? Of course not.

So when Mia is approached to investigate the death of her father in an underwater research facility, she did her duty as both an investigator and as a daughter, she went where she was needed. But with only a handful of suspects, one of whom is her brother, she has to tread carefully.

I remember when I reviewed the first issue of this series, back in March. I found the premiere issue to be both entertaining and intriguing. Now, after seeing the first six issues brought together in this graphic novel, nothing has changed in my mind. The Shadow Glass is one of my favorite comics of 2016.

Cover by David Mack
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: November 2, 2016
Cover Price: $39.99

There are an amazing quantity of folks that I appreciate for one reason or another. Some are writers, others are artists, and even a few are activists. But no one person covers the full range like David Mack. I have been a fan ever since I first discovered his Kabuki comics when they were being published by Caliber Press back in the nineties. Many publishers and opuses later, Mack has become one of the most prolific of all comicdom’s creators. With his latest release, Kabuki Library Edition Volume 4, he concludes his large, heavy bound editions of his iconic characters and their tales.

Cover by Greg Ruth
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: August 31, 2016
Cover Price: $19.99

It’s not every day that I get to read an introspective comic book that deals with a character experiencing their own personal hell. But leave it to Dark Horse Comics to give me exactly what I didn’t know I needed! Alabaster: The Good, The Bad, And The Bird is a shining example of why I keep coming back to them for unique stories and comics! Please, allow me to elaborate further.

Dancy Flammarion is dead. She knows it and we know it. But apparently death comes in varying degrees of
permanence, as it seems she is being tempted/threatened with life. And though she repeatedly declines, sometimes events can spiral out of our control. Much akin to her tenuous grasp on her sanity.

I’m a long time fan of westerns. I grew up watching The Lone Ranger, Rawhide, Gunsmoke, and the like. The concept of man living so close to nature and constantly at odds with both his environment and other humans appealed to me for some reason. Later, my attention turned to fantasy novels and role-playing games but the love of a good story set in the Old West was always there. So when someone comes along and mixes the two, I’m always down for a good a read. Kingsway West #1 is most definitely trying its best to find a place in my heart.

Read on and I’ll tell you why!

It used to be that every time I saw there was a new Conan release, I would hang my head and sigh deeply before laying my money down on the counter. It was a crapshoot, to say the least. But in the past few years in general, and this month in particular, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. This trade paperback, King Conan: Wolves Beyond The Border, is a prime example of masterful storytelling and sequential art working in perfect harmony.

Cullen Bunn is writing Conan! Okay, now that I got that out of the way, allow me to introduce you to Conan The Slayer #1. Being a life-long fan of everyone’s favorite Cimmerian, I always try to keep my eyes open for anything Conan. To be fair, I’ll read anything involving this character. Story by Neil Gaiman
Adaptation, Art, and Lettering by Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: June 22, 2016

I swear Neil Gaiman is like King Midas in some ways. It seems that everything he touches turns to gold. This comic book adaptation of his short story How To Talk To Girls At Parties, is just another example of one of Gaiman’s works being transmogrified in the best of ways. To paraphrase an old idiom: There’s more than one way to re-envision a Neil Gaiman story. I liked the story when I first read it but being the comic nerd I am, I absolutely love this graphic novel in ways I can only barely express.

But allow me to try. Check it out below.
