Neil Gaiman‘s award-winning, best-selling all-around amazing novel American Gods is soon to be a television series on Starz, but first, Dark Horse Comics has launched an ongoing comic book adaptation with American Gods: Shadows #1.

In this first issue, we’re introduced to Shadow Moon, who’s nearing the end of his 3-year prison sentence. He wants nothing more than to just go home and finally be reunited with his wife, Laura — well, that and to take a bubble bath. But one thing is clear, he’s going to stay out of trouble from now on and work on rebuilding his life. Unfortunately, days before his scheduled release, he learns the devastating news that Laura has died, leaving him lost with no sense of what the future holds for him.

SXSW 2017: ‘American Gods’ May Very Well Be Your Next TV Obsession (Spoiler-Free)
Tom Cheredar   |

American Gods SXSW 2017

You’ve probably heard quite a bit of buzz about the forthcoming big-budget television adaptation of American Gods coming to Starz this April, but unless you’re a fan of author Neil Gaiman himself, it’s likely you aren’t prepared for the onslaught of fandom that will come when the show debuts.

I say this having just finished the premiere screening of the pilot at SXSW 2017 in Austin, TX along with nearly the entire cast — most of whom seemed visibly more excited having just witnessed everything they’d been involved in come together on screen.

‘American Gods’ Goes Buffalo Big At SXSW 2017

SXSW 2017 American Gods White Buffalo SXSW2017

“Are you a God?” asked Shadow. The buffalo-headed man shook his head. Shadow thought, for a moment, that the creature was amused. “I am the land,” he said.

SXSW 2017 – DAY 1: As if focused on making those words manifest, the White Buffalo stands above the southwestern plains once more. Resplendent, humongous, and as white as the new driven snows of the west, the statue stands tall here at the American Gods display at SXSW 2017 currently underway in Austin, TX. A white bison, covered in furry hair surrounded by the boneyard, and some relatively subtle swag makes for a fan-happy scene here at South By SouthWest.

Check out the image above of the display, which you can visit at SXSW through Monday.

This is it, folks. This is what many of us have been waiting for. This is the year that Neil Gaiman takes over the world. Well, maybe not the whole world but he’s certainly trying to take over the literary world. With an upcoming Starz television series being adapted from his Hugo, Bram Stoker, Locus, World Fantasy, and Nebula award–winning novel American Gods, it seems only fitting that there be a comic version, too. Right? Thankfully, Dark Horse Comics has stepped up with American Gods: Shadows #1, the first of an ongoing series based on the aforementioned book. Other than a few teaser pages I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but those look magnificent.
