Seeing ReddHere at Geeks of Doom, we are extremely excited to bring you exclusive content from Seeing Redd, the upcoming novel by Frank Beddor.

Seeing Redd, which hits stores August 21, 2007, is the second part of the planned Looking Glass Wars trilogy, a dark retelling of the story of Alice (known here as Alyss Heart) of the classic Lewis Carroll tale Alice In Wonderland. You can read the full synopsis for Seeing Redd here after the jump and download the book’s Prologue and Chapter 1 right here (PDF file opens in a new window).

The first book, The Looking Glass Wars, caught my attention just by the fact that it was set in the world of Alice In Wonderland. The book tells the “true story” of the young Alyss, much like Gregory Maguire’s Wicked is the back story of the Wicked Witch’s from the Wizard of Oz. Also, at my local comic book shop, I found the Hatter M comic book series that follows Alyss’ faithful bodyguard, Hatter Madigan, who, for 13 years, has searched for his mistress after becoming separated from her in The Pool of Tears, the portal from Wonderland to our world. The comic book series, which has art by Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), introduces some characters and plot points from Seeing Redd.

The world of The Looking Glass Wars also includes a companion album of original songs; a card game; an online and forthcoming offline multiplayer role-playing video game; an apparel line; a proposed theatrical musical; and even a teaser trailer. Official Synopsis

Since the brutal murder of her parents and the devastating coup led by her vicious Aunt Redd in part I, Alyss has finally become queen and rightfully restored power to Wonderland. She has also reunited with her childhood companion and love interest Dodge Anders and even has a new bodyguard, the faithful Homburg Molly. Peace seems to be finally returning to Wonderland, but sadly, the fight for the Queendom is far from over. King Arch, in nearby Borderland, is planning to overthrow everything for which Alyss and her friends have fought so hard. A series of phantom sightings set fire to an urban myth that Redd has freed herself and her chief assassin, the Cat, from the confines of Heart Crystal to challenge her niece once again. Has King Arch found an ally? If not, then who has resurrected Redd’s army, the Glass Eyes, and set them loose to attack Wonderland on all sides? Battles will rage, looking glasses explode and the Alyssians are once again uniting to defend White Imagination and all the wonders of Wonderland in SEEING REDD.

This fast paced, roller-coaster of a sequel filled with marvelously evil new villains and fantastic battle scenes will both satisfy fans of the first book and those new to the trilogy. SEEING REDD is sure to have young readers begging for more information about this Queen named Alyss. Long Live Wonderland!

About The Author

In addition to creating The Looking Glass Wars saga, Frank Beddor is also a two-time freestyle world champion skiier and was a member of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. After retiring from professional skiing, Beddor got into acting, first appearing on scene as John Cusack’s skiing stunt double in the 1985 teen comedy Better Off Dead. He went on to act in more films and in theater, and eventually became a producer, most notably on the Farrelly Brothers outrageous comedy There’s Something About Mary. While in London for the UK premiere of Mary, Beddor visited the British Museum which had an exhibit of ancient cards which contained an incomplete deck with images that reminded him of a more mysterious, twisted, and gothic version of Alice in Wonderland. After the exhibit, Beddor couldn’t stop thinking about those cards. Through a series of events, he met an antiquities dealer who owned the remaining cards from that deck. The story the deal told Beddor — revealed one card at a time, each with incredible imagery — is the basis for the author’s Looking Glass Wars trilogy.

  1. Since you mentioned Oz, I’m going plug an indie comic book that readers who enjoy revisited literature might also like. I will also admit that some friends do this book and I would love to get them more readers.
