At the press junket for Hellboy II: The Golden Army today, a few details were revealed in regards to another planned sequel. While nothing has been set in stone, everyone involved with the film is hopefully optimistic that we will see a third Hellboy movie, to be filmed sometime after director Guillermo del Toro finishes his commitments to The Hobbit, so don’t expect it for a few years.
While plot details for Hellboy III are not known, Del Toro did say that the third film would “up the ante” and that they plan to bring in the Hellboy/BPRD character Lobster Johnson. Also revealed from the official Hellboy II shooting script is a scene that had to be cut that was to have set up the third film, showing Rasputin, the villain from the first film, returning and speaking of “the end of it all.” Both the Lobster Johnson and Rasputin characters appear in the Hellboy collected graphic novel, Conqueror Worm, which coincidentally has an introduction by Del Toro, so perhaps Hellboy III will tackle that story.
The whole cast and crew are very much looking forward to working in the Hellboy universe again, with all the actors pointing to Del Toro as the main reason they would return. Del Toro and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola have discussed ideas, and Del Toro plans to wrap up his involvement with Hellboy with the third movie. Mignola mentioned that they had no intention of having a different director helm the possible third film.
Mignola spoke a bit about a possible BPRD television series, but it sounds like plans for that are at a very early stage, and that it may never happen.
