Remake announcements have been flooding in. Some have been painful to hear, some a little amusing, and some just ridiculous. Falling into the “ridiculous” column — it’s being reported that popular ’80s TV show MacGyver will be remade into a feature length movie.
MacGyver told of the adventures of a special agent who was able to get out of the worst of situations and captivity, using only the simplest objects. It starred Richard Dean Anderson.
My only wonder here, is can the title MacGyver really sell in these modern times, or would it be more fruitful to just make a movie using the concept of a super smart dude who gets out of problems using insanely creative methods? I think using the title may just harm this project more than do it good, considering MacGyver for the most part is pretty much used for joke purposes these days.
Raffaella De Laurentis will produce the film, being developed by New Line Cinema. Her father Dino De Laurentis will serve as executive producer. Dino has produced countless projects including the 1976 and 1986 remakes of King Kong; Every movie set in the world of Hannibal Lecter except the big one, Silence of the Lambs… including Manhunter, and he co-produced Army of Darkness. He is the grandfather of popular TV chef, Giadi De Laurentis, of Food Network fame.
There is no one working on the script yet, but New Line’s Richard Brener had this to say:
We think we’re a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise.
I just got a visual of Kif from Futurama, shaking his head and sighing in pain.

There is nothing these days immune to a remake. Give me the “A-Team” movie!
