James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger & Tom Arnold To Reunite For ‘True Lies 2’?

True Lies

In what is quite the interesting little catch by MTV Movies Blog yesterday, who picked up on a small little bit in a New York Times feature on Tom Arnold. In the very last part of the story, they mention and offer quotes from Tom himself about an upcoming project that will involve himself, director James Cameron, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. That’s right, Tom Arnold claims that the team behind the fantastic action/spy comedy True Lies will be joining up for a new project, while being a bit cryptic as to whether it will be a sequel to the 1994 movie, or if it will just be the same kind of premise.

Here’s what Tom had to say about it:

All I know is Jim Cameron’s making it and Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and I are going to be in it, and it starts shooting in 14 months, the day after Arnold stops being governor of California. It’s not going to be called “˜True Lies II,’ but it might as well be. I can live with that.

The main thing to note here is that little thing about the 14 months. We all know James Cameron isn’t a film-a-year kind of guy — in fact, he seems to go more for the film-a-decade order. OK maybe not that extreme, but still. After 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day came True Lies in ’94, and then Cameron went into 1997’s Titanic, so the man was pretty busy in the 90s. Since Titanic, though, he’s only done IMAX movies and deep sea expeditions and no movies until now, with Avatar set to be released in December. So could Cameron actually be up for jumping right back into another flick? A movie even similar to True Lies would be both relevant to today’s times, and it would be a good project for the director to have a little fun with.

I’m not sure when or where, but I know I have heard very minor rumblings of a possible True Lies sequel, but it was never more than a whisper. But with a little digging, I discovered that this is not the first time that Arnold has claimed that this project is happening. Back in January of this year, he made the same exact claim with even a curiously similar quote to Star Pulse:

If all goes as planned, the day Arnold (Schwarzenegger) leaves office we will again team with Jim Cameron and do a comedy. Jim says it might not be called True Lies II, but it will be fun.

True Lies was my first real movie experience, and we’ve all stayed close, which I’ve realized, fifty films later, is very unusual. I love those guys. The only role Arnold has done since he became Governor was a cameo with Jamie Lee Curtis in The Kid and I, a movie I wrote and produced.

So what do you guys think; is Tom Arnold just spouting these things off randomly, or is this project a passion movie among old friends? Better yet, would you be interested in seeing a sequel to True Lies, or a similar movie? I know for me personally, True Lies is probably my favorite Cameron movie after Terminator 2, so for me, it could be a really great thing to see happen!
