Writers Hired For New Line’s ‘Vacation’ Reboot; Chevy Chase To Return

VacationJonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have been hired to pen the script for New Line’s planned Vacation sequel/reboot, according to Variety.

While the trade is reporting that New Line is doing a franchise reboot as if that’s new information, this project was actually already confirmed back in early October 2009 with David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) to produce (read Are We Ready For A Sequel To “˜National Lampoon’s Vacation’?).

Back in October, New Line announced their intentions for the new Vacation, with Dobkin producing and possibly directing. The new film will be a reboot of the franchise, but also a type of sequel, since it will be about a now-adult Rusty Griswold — the son in the original films — and his own road trip, this time with his own wife and kids. Where to? Wally World theme park, the destination of the first film, which is closing its doors forever.

Chevy Chase, who played dad Clark Griswold in the film series, is reportedly returning as the grandfather for the new film. No confirmation yet if Beverly D’Angelo will be “grandma,” though initial reports stated that there was room for her in the film. (Chase and D’Angelo did just recently reprise their roles as the Griswolds for a Home Away commercial and short – Watch Now: Chevy Chase In “˜Hotel Hell Vacation’ Film Short).

The new Vacation will not sport the usual National Lampoon credit and is reportedly more like Planes, Trains and Automobiles in tone than RV.

But who will play Rusty Griswold? No word yet on that. Each Vacation installment has seen a new actor play the character, starting with Anthony Michael Hall in the original 1983 movie. (If they do this movie right, then I’d love to see Hall back for this.)

As far as the writers go, you might recognize Daley from in front of the camera as Lance Sweets on the television’s Bones, though more so from his childhood role as Sam Weir on Freaks and Geeks. Goldstein and Daley currently have three other projects in various stages with New Line: Horrible Bosses, Burt Wonderstone, and The $40,000 Man, and are working on Cal of the Wild for DreamWorks.

  1. Not sure if this is good or bad or whatever but the “Home Away” commercial during this years Super Bowl gave me hope that a new movie could be OK. The commercial was cheesey and somewhat exaggerated but isn’t that what made the Vacation movies so entertaining? I think Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo still have that spark and would LOVE to see them as the grandparents (a natural progression). I like this the way I like the idea of Ghostbusters 3 including new heroes but having the original cast reprise their roles as mentors. Just hope it doesn’t fall short like Indiana Jones 4 with Shia Lebeouf…
