Netflix Unveils Streaming-Only Option, Raises Prices On Other Plans

The Movie God   |  @   |

You’ve wanted it, and now you’ve got it: Netflix has announced their new streaming-only plan, for those of you who have no use for one or two DVDs out at a time, and are only interested in watching movies and TV shows directly on your computer, gaming console, or various other streaming options.

Netflix states that the new plan will cost you $7.99 a month, which is a dollar less than what the next plan up — one DVD out at a time along with the instant streaming — used to be.

This of course brings us to the next announcement Netflix made, which is increases to all of their prices. Due to the growing quantity of movie and TV show offerings that are streamed, the company will add $1 to the cost of their $8.99 and $13.99 plans. All plans after that will see multi-dollar increases in prices, anywhere from $3 to $8 more than they once were.

You can see all of the price changes in this chart below.

Oh, and for those of you wondering about Blu-ray plans, no price changes will be made.

  1. Finally! I’ve had the same DVD sitting on my TV for about 3 or 4 months now.

  2. Well time to cancel my subscription I have had for years. I just don’t see this as worthwhile considering all the other online options.

  3. I got this email stating the new price increases around 9:45 last night and wasn’t totally pissed, but wasn’t impressed either. :-/ Every dollar counts these days and I hope we don’t see any more price increases for a while.

  4. The email I received said that my plan (3 DVDs for $16.99) would increase to $19.99 per month with the first billing cycle after January 2, 2011.

  5. This is total b.s. I HATE watching movies on the computer and have only watched two Netflix streams in the past few years (an episode of “Amazing Stories” that’s not available on DVD and a movie that a friend kept bugging me to watch).

    It’s bad enough that…

    1. They bombard you with spamish emails that there’s no way to disable every time a disc is sent/received/delayed (which is why I didn’t notice the price increase letter).

    2. They ship discs from Timbuktu to cause delays and bump you to the bottom of the list for new releases if they feel you’ve gotten too many movies in a month with their so-called “unlimited” plans.

    3. Older DVD releases keep inexplicably vanishing from their database and abruptly becoming unavailable.

    4. They’re delaying the release of new discs to encourage people to buy ’em (willing to bet that move has only encouraged more illegal downloading).

Since I’ve had a Netflix account for a long time, I must still be on an old rate — just checked and it’s increasing from $15 to $20 because of this f’n option that I don’t even use.

  6. I could see this being okay if their streaming actually had options.

From what I can see, there’s a good amount of TV to watch but only a handful of decent, fairly new movies you would want to see. The rest are either much older or the weirdest collection of completely unheard of movies you can think of.

I’ve personally been waiting for them to add a lot more newer options before I sign up, but this certainly doesn’t help…at all.

  7. I won’t deal with them until they offer captions for the hearing impaired online. I don’t have enough time to waste on any TV or most movies. I would just as soon buy my movies from amazon and rent them to friends.
