Filming began today in Albuquerque, NM on Marvel Studios’ Avengers movie, which is now officially titled Marvel’s The Avengers. The movie, which is directed by Joss Whedon from his own screenplay, will also shoot in Cleveland, OH and New York, NY.

Marvel Studios has released the first image from the set, which is not of the actors, but rather of a row of director’s chairs that have the names of some of the Marvel superheroes who will appear in Marvel’s The Avengers: (L to R): Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk.

Marvel’s The Avengers is set to hit theaters in the United States on May 4, 2012. The film is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed, and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.
