Watchmen

DC Comics announced last week that they will be bringing at least 100 collected works exclusively to Amazon‘s brand new Kindle Fire eReader.

Contrary to the thoughts in my head, the Kindle Fire is not an unfortunate malfunction of the popular eReader. It is, in fact, a brand new model that allows full-color appreciation of digital media. And with this new device’s announcement, it was only a matter of time until we started seeing information about comics. The interesting thing about this, though, is that DC will be offering these 100 books exclusively to the Kindle Fire. This sounds like a really big deal as it abandons the comiXology model and the extremely iOS devices from Apple. Well, at least it sounds like it’s interesting.

In fact, a lot of the collected works on the Kindle list, including Batman: Hush and Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin, are already on comiXology’s iOS applications. So, it gives Amazon a cool thing to say about having an exclusive deal, but that’s only because it’s the work as a collection. You will most likely be able to purchase all of the content on all platforms.

I do like the idea of purchasing the comics as a collected work, and I think that this model will be extremely effective for all parties involved. But, it is apparent that with their content available on both formats, they are attempting to reach all comic markets. Their Kindle approach is clearly intended to reach the casual comic fan with an eReader, and announcing Watchmen as one of the available works is certainly evidence of that, while DC’s approach to the iPad is more for the hardcore comics reader. And with the announcement of day and date digital availability, that is clear is day.

This is a great way to appeal to both markets, and it will be interesting to see exactly how long this “exclusive” lasts.

Listed here below are all of the comic book collections that have been announced, thus far:
