The 3D horror remake sequel Piranha 3DD was originally supposed to open last November before it was pulled from Dimension Films’ release schedule and given an unspecified 2012 premiere date, but that didn’t stop the studio from releasing a new trailer today.
You can watch it here below.
Alexandre Aja, the director of the 2010 hit Piranha 3D, has turned over his directorial duties to John Gulager this time around.
Gulager is best known for calling the shots on the 2005 horror-comedy Feast, the making of which was chronicled in the third and final season of Project: Greenlight, and its two direct-to-video sequels. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the writers of the Feast movies and four of the Saw sequels, wrote the screenplay which was subsequently re-written by producer Joel Soisson.
Piranha 3DD stars Danielle Panabaker, Gary Busey, Paul Scheer, David Koechner, and David Hasselhoff as himself. Returning from the cast of the 2010 remake are Ving Rhames and Christopher Lloyd. The plot of the sequel follows the carnivorous, prehistoric underwater predators who made a buffet of a Spring Break party in the remake and ate Jerry O’Connell’s pecker as they made their way to a nearby water park for seconds. It’s apparent from the title that not only will the gore be getting beefed up from the 2010 Piranha 3D, but so will the T&A content. Plus, Piranha 3DD was actually filmed in 3D, unlike the remake which was post-converted to 3D.
I’ve never seen Piranha 3D so I don’t know how the sequel will measure up to the remake, but this trailer promises a gloriously depraved guilty pleasure you don’t usually see a major studio releasing. Hasselhoff looks like he’s going to pull an Abbie Hoffman and steal this movie. One Hoff continues the grand tradition of a greater Hoff.
Piranha 3DD opens sometime this year, possibly during the summer. That would be the most appropriate time in my opinion.
