Last we had heard, Chronicle director Josh Trank had come on board to develop Shadow of the Colossus, a movie based on the fantastic PlayStation 2 video game of the same name for Sony.
Now comes word that a writer for the project has been hired in Seth Lochhead. Only one notable credit to his name so far, Lochhead previously wrote Hanna, the movie about a young girl (played by Saoirse Ronan) raised in the wilderness and trained to be a deadly assassin.
Shadow of the Colossus tells the story of a young man named Wander who enters forbidden lands in a desperate attempt to return the soul of a fallen girl named Mono. In order to do this, he must seek out and destroy sixteen colossi first.
The game has gathered up a massive fan following over the years for its tremendous visuals, artistic presentation, and unique gaming experience. Unlike most other games, there’s nothing but boss fights in the game; you don’t have to battle your way through waves of lesser enemies, just the colossi. The rest of the game is navigating a massive open world on horseback tying to locate these colossi.
The movie will be tricky because one of the common beliefs of those who have played and loved the game is that they feel horrible destroying these colossi. While often gigantic (some of the biggest bosses you’ll ever come across in games) and intimidating, they do not seek to harm you. In most cases, it’s only when you attack them that they defend themselves.
This isn’t something that fits the Hollywood mold well, and one can’t help but wonder if they’ll paint the colossi as much more aggressive and violent creatures to fit the villain expectations for a popcorn flick, or if they’ll stay faithful to the game’s story.
What are your expectations for a Shadow of the Colossus movie?
