All Hallows Read banner

It’s my favorite time of year – Fall is here and Halloween is only days away. And one thing I love to do is curl up on the couch with a good book, especially one that’s a little eerie and spooky.

So, here below are my picks of 2013 books to read for All Hallow’s Read this Fall, which include titles from Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Kim Harrison, as well as H.P. Lovecraft, Frankenstein, and Dark Shadows stories, and more!

All Hallow’s Read: Halloween 2013 Reading Recommendations…

Neil Gaiman The Ocean at the End of the Lane

The Ocean at the End of the Lane: A Novel
Hardcover | Kindle
By Neil Gaiman
HarperCollins Publishers
Release date: June 18, 2013

When looking for something to read in the Fall, especially on Halloween, a great place to start is in Neil Gaiman’s grand catalogue of titles. Books like Coraline, The Graveyard Book, and even the storybook Wolves In The Walls are all perfect for this time of year. For 2013, Gaiman has added another eerie story to his works with The Ocean at the End of the Lane, a fantasy adventure. If you like audiobooks, Gaiman narrates the audiobook for this, and his readings are always a great treat. (If you’re unfamiliar with the author, check out this Beginner’s Guide To Neil Gaiman I put together a while back.)

100 Ghosts Quirk Books title banner R2-D2 Ghost

100 Ghosts: A Gallery of Harmless Haunts
Hardcover | Kindle
By Doogie Horner
Quirk Books
Release date: September 10, 2013

Here’s a cute one for Halloween: For 100 Ghosts: A Gallery of Harmless Haunts, author, illustrator, and comedian Doogie Horner created a collection of 100 line drawings of the iconic White Sheet Ghost rendered in various ways from something simply mundane like an after-bath look or as familiar characters like Star Wars droid R2-D2 or the famous boy wizard Harry Potter.

Joe Hill NOS4A2

NOS4A2: A Novel
By Joe Hill
William Morrow/HarperCollins
Hardcover | Paperback | Kindle
Release date: April 30, 2013 | Paperback: October 15, 2013

From the man who gave us Heart-Shaped Box and Horns, as well as the comic book series Locke & Key, comes NOS4A2 (pronounced like Nosferatu), Joe Hill’s third full-length novel, which was released this month in paperback. In the story, Victoria McQueen has a gift of finding things and she’s able to transport to anywhere she needs to go when she rides her bicycle through a specific area. One day, Victoria “finds” Charles Talent Manx, a man who abducts children in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith, which has the NOS4A2 vanity plate, and takes them outside the regular world to a terrifying place he calls “Christmasland.”

Gris Grimly's Frankenstein

Gris Grimly’s Frankenstein
Hardcover | Kindle
By Mary Shelley (Author), Gris Grimly (Illustrator)
Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins Publishers
Release date: August 27, 2013

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is one of my favorite stories ever, and is undoubtedly one of the best gothic horror novels ever written. Therefore, any reason to experience this story again is a good one. Add to that the illustrations of Gris Grimly and it’s sure to be a winning combination. I totally loved Grimly’s Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Madness – another perfect Halloween read – so I recommend picking up his illustrative take on Frankenstein.

Stephen King Doctor Sleep and The Shining

Doctor Sleep
Hardcover | Kindle
By Stephen King
Simon and Schuster/Scribner
Release date: September 24, 2013

It’s been 36 years since the master of horror Stephen King’s The Shining novel was released, and now the author has decided to revisit the story with Doctor Sleep. In the new book, we find out what happened to Danny Torrance, the little boy from The Shining, now that he’s an adult and what has he been doing with this “special” abilities since his frightful stay at The Overlook Hotel. If you’ve never read The Shining, a new mass market paperback edition was recently released and is only $4.79 right now; also, the Kindle version of that edition is on sale right now for only $3.99.

Dark Shadows: Wolf Moon Rising cover spread

Dark Shadows: Wolf Moon Rising
Paperback | Kindle
by Lara Parker
Macmillan/Tor Books
Release date: August 20, 2013

Wolf Moon Rising is the latest Dark Shadows novel, which is based on the 1960’s television show about a vampire who returns to his ancestral estate after a witch puts a curse on him. In this new book, written by Lara Parker (who played Angelique on the original TV series), a portrait is lost, but it’s not just any old portrait – it’s one that’s been helping Quentin Collins maintain his youthful appearance AND keep his werewolf curse under control. There’s also some time-traveling going on and a love story for 16-year-old David, who’s heir to the Collins fortune. A nice addition to the Dark Shadows franchise.

Quirk Books Welcome to Lovecraft Middle School

Tales from Lovecraft Middle School: Substitute Creature
Hardcover | Kindle
by Charles Gilman
Quirk Books
Release date: September 24, 2013

Now here’s a really great title for children ages 9 and up this Halloween: Substitute Creature, book four of Charles Gilman’s Tales from Lovecraft Middle School. First off, each hardcover book of the series has lenticular cover that reveals a hidden creature – that right there will hook the kids in; plus, there’s black and white illustrations throughout. Each book is quick and engrossing, centering on a Lovecraftian, haunted middle school with monsters in disguise and mysteries to be solved. I read each book in one sitting and recommend these as quick reads for adults, and definitely a good choice to get kids reading some spooky stories.

Stoker's Manuscript By Royce Prouty

Stoker’s Manuscript
Hardcover | Kindle
By Royce Prouty
Putnam Adult

A rare-manuscript expert named Joseph Barkeley hired to authenticate and purchase the original draft and notes for Bram Stoker’s Dracula discovers that the buyer is a member of the oldest family in Transylvania. The expert then becomes a prisoner to the son of Vlad Dracul and must decipher cryptic messages hidden in the text of the original Dracula in order to gain his freedom. Revisiting the universe of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is always a delight, and Stoker’s Manuscript promises to expand upon this world.

Anne Rice The Wolves of Midwinter: The Wolf Gift Chronicles

The Wolves of Midwinter: The Wolf Gift Chronicles

She’s taken on witches, vampires, and even Jesus Christ, now Anne Rice has returned to her preternatural roots with The Wolf Gift Chronicles.
