‘Sinister Six’ Producers Say Not To Expect Traditional Villain Team Up

Sinister Six

Ever since Sony announced that they will expanding their Spider-Man brand by building a cinematic universe around the hero and some of his greatest villains, we’ve been wondering what a Spider-Man world sequestered in New York City would look like. When it was announced that the studio would release a Sinister Six film, which would be written and directed by Drew Goddard, we also started to wonder which lucky six will team up to fight the webslinger, or if it will be about that at all.

Now Sinister Six producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad is talking a little bit more about the film itself just weeks before the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Hit the jump to read more.

In an interview with IGN, Tolmach spoke about how we might not see the traditional Sinister Six in the titular film:

“Nothing is sacred. I mean it’s going to be the best Six that you can imagine, but it’s going to make sense in the world that we’re building.”

The first Sinister Six consisted of Doctor Octopus, Electro, Vulture, Sandman, Kraven The Hunter, and Scorpion. The lineup consistently changed after that.

Based on what we have seen, the film looks like it already has four, maybe five members. With The Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Electro (Jamie Foxx), and Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), possibly being three members. Doc Ock’s four arms and Vulture’s wings were teased in many trailers, so they might be even added to the team. Then there’s the Lizard, but based on how The Amazing Spider-Man ended, he may not join the group.

But how will fans react when they learn that the producers are going a stray on tradition. Arad said:

“When you translate comic to film the word ‘classic’ means the first fifty issues. Because after that we all made changes; changes that had to do with science-fiction turning into science. I think just the need to move this world forward.

So, of course we’ll make adaptations about these guys and what was their motivations because many of them have multiple motivations. It depends, is it ultimate Spider-Man? Is it Spider-Man? Is it some three-piece issue that takes them to space? We have a bigger responsibility to represent the character of the villain as it was conceived, because that way it will survive the test of time. All the rest… that’s a movie. What an opportunity to make — can you imagine seeing Paul Giamatti in a leather suit? I think they would have killed us. They gave us a hard time with the Lizard.”

It’s not uncommon to see some slight changes to cinematic comic book characters. Although some of those changes are unwelcome, some voices may be loud enough for changes to be made. While I didn’t mind the Spidey Suit in The Amazing Spider-Man, many felt that it strayed too far from the original, which is why a brand new suit was made for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

But you can’t please everyone.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theaters on May 2.
