Wait, What? ‘Tetris’ Movie Being Developed

Movies that are based on video games usually result in an unwatchable disaster of a final product, and so, naturally, it’s time for a movie based on possibly the last video game you’d expect to see adapted: Tetris.

The movie is being developed by Threshold Entertainment and Larry Kasanoff, who was a producer on the Mortal Kombat movies of the ’90s (as well as various other MK-related titles) and movies like True Lies and Strange Days.

Continue reading to see what Kasanoff had to say about the movie, and, just for the hell of it, a video of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak showing off his Tetris skills.

Anyone who grew up playing games on a Nintendo product likely logged countless hours trying to maneuver and fit the various and sometimes awkward shapes of Tetris as cleanly as possible into a confined area as the speed—and pressure—constantly increases, ultimately leading to you losing complete control of both the game and your inside voice.

So what will a movie version of the game be about? We don’t know yet, but here’s a few things Kasanoff had to say about the project:

“It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.

Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind “˜Tetris’ which makes it a much more imaginative thing.

What you [will] see in “˜Tetris’ is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.”

That’s all that’s known so far, and no director or cast is attached yet.

But when dealing with something like this that’s not based on any kind of specific story, they could go pretty much anywhere they want with it. Just look at Battleship. Hopefully Kasanoff and company find a much better path to travel than that movie did.
