Suicide Squad

The cast for director David Ayer‘s anti-hero ensemble Suicide Squad has just been announced, and the names that have been confirmed reveal a very impressive cast.

It has been confirmed that Jared Leto will play the Joker, while Will Smith has been cast as Deadshot, not Boomerang as originally thought. Tom Hardy comes back to play in the DC cinematic sandbox, but won’t reprise his role as Bane from The Dark Knight Rises; instead he will play Rick Flag the founder of the Suicide Squad. While it was reported that Jai Courtney would play Deadshot, but in actuality, he is signed on to play Boomerang. Cara Delevinge will play Enchantress, and not Vixen as originally thought. Margot Robbie was the first to be cast, she will play Harley Quinn. More after the jump.

This is pretty exciting news. Here’s what Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman said in a statement,

“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

There are still a few other roles left to fill though. Amanda Waller, who over sees the team and sends them out on missions, could be played by Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, or Oprah Winfrey.

According to Variety, Suicide Squad will be the anti-hero version of Ocean’s Eleven for WB. Now how this all ties in with the cinematic universe the studio is setting up is still unknown. Will Leto make a cameo appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and if he doesn’t, will he appear in the solo Batman film?

It really would make more sense if he did have a cameo appearance seeing that Batman V. Superman bows March 2016, while Suicide Squad is scheduled for an August 2016 release.

Looking at the current schedule, Sony’s untitled new Smurfs movie opens up on the same day as Suicide Squad, August 5th. Fox’s untitled Planet of the Apes sequel opens up a week before on July 29th. Depending on how the film looks and tracks, we would see another shifting of schedules. It just depends on who makes the first move, and to which date.

Ayer is coming off his quiet hit Fury. Suicide Squad would be Leto’s first major pic since winning the Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. Smith and Robbie can next be seen together in Focus. Courtney will appear in Terminator: Genysis. Hardy will be joined by Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant.
