Last year, leading up to the premiere of Season 4 of Game Of Thrones, HBO released Catch the Throne: The Mixtape, featuring hip hop and reggaeton songs from artists like Wale, Big Boi, Common, and Daddy Yankee that were inspired by Seasons 1-3 of the hit series.
This year for the lead-up to Season 5, it looks like HBO has reached out to the metal community for the next Mixtape, as bands like Anthrax and Killswitch Engage will be participating this time around.
Earlier this month, Anthrax updated their Facebook cover photo with an image of the Iron Throne from the HBO set including a pentagram above it resembling the one on the cover of the band’s last studio album, 2011’s Worship Music, with the words “Metal Is Coming.” (See photo here at top.) This would seem to reference their new album, which will feature drum tracks recorded on the set of Game Of Thrones in Belfast, Northern Ireland (plans for this were revealed this past Summer). Not surprisingly, the musicians are fans of the fantasy drama, and when they reached out to showrunner D.B. Weiss for permission to record on set, they found out that he, according to Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, is “a huge metalhead.”
This week, Anthrax posted photos of the band members in a recording studio with the message “Stay tuned….” along with the hashtag #”ŽANTHRAXalbum2015“¬, which indicates that they are there recording more music for the new album. But what was intriguing about the posts was that they also used the hashtag #”ŽCatchTheThrone“¬, which insinuates that the legendary metal band will be contributing a song to the 2015 Mixtape. Although this is not officially confirmed yet, it’s a safe bet. See the photos of the band in the studio here below.
Fellow metal band Killswitch Engage recently posted a studio photo of their own to their social media accounts announcing that they will have a new song coming for the Game Of Thrones compilation. They too used the hashtag #”ŽCatchTheThrone”¬ (see below).
For the first Mixtape, which was produced by Launch Point Records, HBO didn’t make an official announcement about the project until early March 2014 just before its release via free streaming on SoundCloud and on the last night of SXSW in Austin, TX, at a special listening party where compilation participants Magazeen and Dee Goodz gave a live performance.
Also, the songs on the first Mixtape included music samples from the Game of Thrones soundtrack for the previous seasons. It’s possible the new songs will have samples from the Season 4 score, as HBO wants these Mixtape offerings to immerse fans into a Game Of Thrones experience.
What currently active metal bands do you think would fit into this upcoming Mixtape? While the first Mixtape had songs by heavies like Common, it also featured music by newcomers Snow Tha Product, Bodega Bamz, and the aforementioned Magazeen. So perhaps the second installment will follow the same formula, including maybe another SXSW appearance this March.
Game Of Thrones returns to HBO for the start of Season 5 on April 2015.
