Lady Death: Chaos Rules! #1

There are a lot of folks out there trying to raise funds for their creator-owned comics. Hell, I’ve written about a lot of them for this column. Most of the time, it’s a new(ish) concept or character from a creator that no one has heard of before, because let’s face it…it’s tough to get noticed in today’s comics market. But every once in a blue moon, a well-known writer or artist puts something out there that they want to expose to the world at large, and Lady Death: Chaos Rules! is precisely that. It’s a Kickstarter campaign that’s ready to take on the world!

The brainchild of Brian Pulido, Lady Death has been a staple in the comics market since her debut in Evil Ernie #1 way back in 1991. She got her own mini-series the following year and the rest, as they say, is history. Multiple story lines have come and gone. I should know, I own almost everything ever published with Lady Death in it. I’ve got action figures, t-shirts, and statues, too! So when I got offered an advanced look at some exclusive art and write this article, I was pretty stoked. (GoD headquarters all abuzz that day.) I’ve never gotten the chance to meet the creator, but I love his work. Word has it, this is also a great jumping-on point for new readers!

I did get a chance to communicate with Pulido and he was very forthcoming about the ins and outs of this title, insofar as what we can expect to see in this book.

When I asked him about her “bad girl” persona that she is so famous for, this was his reply:

“Candidly, she is more brutal than ever. Our story is set in the present, in a vision of Hell that is extraordinarily treacherous. Think of it as a new chapter in her life. Hell has been re-envisioned as a teeming megalopolis of all architecture from all time, crashing upon itself, festering with all the vile humanity you would come to expect. In this environment, Lady Death wakes from a 20-year spell-induced slumber. Who among her despicable enemies is responsible? How long until she exacts blood vengeance?”

He was also kind enough to let on that we would see some old faces, as well:

Characters associated with Lady Death’s main storyline will be making appearances in Lady Death: Chaos Rules #1 and the upcoming stories. The slumber [from which she awakens] does connect Lady Death to her Chaos! Comics continuity. To see how I resolve all that, you gotta read Lady Death: Chaos! Rules #1!”

Loaded with lots of signed goodies, this Kickstarter has something for every Lady Death fan (or fan-to-be). And it a guaranteed win, since it already made it to goal this week! And it’s easy to find a reward to fit every budget. For a mere $5, you can be the proud recipient of the digital version of the graphic novel. Double that and you get double the comics, two graphic novels and the script to boot! But if physical books are your bag, then a $20 pledge will get you the softbound version signed by Brian Pulido (plus the digital copy, too). There are prints available in very limited amounts; Kickstarter-only soft and hardbacks; statues; and even a single reward that features a real one-carat diamond embedded in the sword hilt on the cover! Of course, there are many, many more items offered at a wide variety of levels. Personally, I’m all about the signed, numbered books so I plopped down $32 to get a copy of the original story The Reckoning, a digital copy of Chaos Rules, and a print. Not a bad trade, in my opinion! [Editor’s Note – not bad in my opinion either, count me in!]

With massive campaigns like this, there’s usually stretch goals added throughout the run, which means that if a certain dollar amount is raised post-goal, then funders will get a free item.

So, obviously I am sold on it! I have been a big fan from the very start, as I’m sure many of you were. And while it has been 21 years since her first series came out (and 24 since her first appearance), I bet she will continue to entertain and enthrall a multitude of readers. Apparently lots of folks feel the same way since it was fully funded in just 70 minutes! So make sure you check out the video here below and the Kickstarter page here before it ends on March 6, 2015. I would hate for you to miss out on it!

Created in 1991 by writer Brian Pulido (me), Lady Death is a supernatural, sword-wielding anti-hero who battles evil. Originally, she was Hope, a teenaged girl who is deceived by demons and trades her mortality for eternal life in Hell. To ensure her survival, she turns to the darkness within herself and begins a transformation into Lady Death. Part of the 90’s vanguard of “Bad Girl” comics, Lady Death has been published in comic books for two decades, she’s been the star of a 2005 animated feature film and tons of Lady Death products and merchandise have been made to the delight of her fans. As a symbol of fierce independence, Lady Death is tattooed on thousands of bodies across the globe.

In Chaos Rules #1, Lady Death is awakened from a 20-year, spell-induced slumber, she finds herself in the fiery pits of Hell. Two decades of her life, gone –– nothing more than nightmares. Who among her depraved enemies is responsible? How long until she exacts bloody vengeance? Not long!!! This is the first new Lady Death comic I’ve personally published in 12 years. This story –– chock full of sex, violence, and very bad behavior –– is Lady Death, fully realized.

The Details: Lady Death: Chaos Rules #1 is a 48-page, square-bound all new graphic novel that captures the rockin’ independent spirit of her original Chaos! Comics (1994-2002) run but takes her story to the present. She’s a bolder, darker, sexier Hope, with more brains and brawn – and she is VERY pissed off!
