Mike Myers and Dana Carvey

Party time! Excellent!

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey reprised their respective characters, Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, in a new “Wayne’s World” segment on tonight’s Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special.

The two alumns reunited to bring a new episode of their Aurora cable access television show for the SNL 40 special.

Watch the video of the SNL 40 appearance here below, along with two of the original SNL skits from the early 1990s.

The long-haired metalhead characters with their own cable show, “Wayne’s World,” recorded live from Wayne’s basement in his parents’ house in Aurora, IL, first appeared on Saturday Night Live on the February 18, 1989 episode. The show would open with the duo singing the theme song — with the lyrics “Wayne’s World, Wayne’s World, Party time, Excellent,” as Wayne strummed his electric guitar and Garth banged his drumsticks on his lap. The two seemingly stoner friends were into heavy metal, hockey, and babes, and their show at times would drift into dream sequences that would see the two hosts in triumphant moments. Several catchphrases were coined in the late 1980s/early 1990s thanks to this skit — “Party On,” “Excellent” (accompanied by air guitar), “NOT!, and “Shwing!”

One of my favorite “Wayne’s World” segments from SNL was one they did soon after the 1991 fall of the communist Soviet Union, where they did a Top 10 list called “Top 10 Reasons Why Communism Fell” (video of that here below). A lot of references to the events of the day, so it might be a case where “you had to be there,” but for me, this one tops them all. A close second is when Tom Hanks stars as Garth’s cousin Barry, a roadie for Aerosmith, who comes on Wayne’s World, jamming with Wayne and Garth (after hanging out upstairs in Wayne’s mom’s kitchen, which we get to see through the “Nook Cam.”)

For SNL 40, Myers and Carvey don their long-haired wigs to bring us another Top 10 list — the Top 10 Things About SNL — where they poked fun at SNL creator Lorne Michaels; frequent musical guest Kanye West (who was in the audience pretending he was going to come up on stage like he did to Beck at the Grammys last week); and of course, themselves (including relying on catchphrases).

The popular recurring SNL skit spawned two feature films — Wayne’s World (1992) and Wayne’s World 2 (1993).
