You need to catch up on The Returned if you haven’t already, because…spoilers! And there really are no excuses because if you have A&E on Demand, they let you watch the second episode “Simon” before it airs tonight!
Last week on The Returned 1.1 “Camille,” they introduced us to the story not in the usual way of pilots with a lot of explaining dialogue. We watched a bus hurtle off a cliff four years ago, with a young Camille (India Ennenga) on it. Four years later, up climbs Camille, still the exact same young as when she went over. Her parents (Mark Pellegrino and Tandi Wright) are naturally thrilled, but a bit frightened. Her not-so-identical-anymore twin Lena (Sophie Lowe) – super freaked out. Her mother’s boyfriend, Peter (Jeremy Sisto), acquired after Camille’s death ripped her parents apart – confused. Other people have returned. Simon (Mat Vairo) came back to see his fiance, Rowan (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), but she thought she was losing her mind. A wife returns to her husband and….please watch – it’s extra tragic, even for a show steeped in tragedy. Julie (Sandrine Holt) found a mute boy but is really reluctant to turn him over to the authorities. Lucy (Leah Gibson) is viciously stabbed.
The Returned 1.2 “Simon” review: The second episode delivered as good as the first did. So we figured out from the promo pics and videos that this would delve deeper into the Simon and Rowan (and Tommy – Kevin Alejandro) backstory.
Six years ago, Rowan and Simon are so happy as she watches him play in his band the night before their wedding. And on their wedding day…let’s just say since this is The Returned and they kinda gave it away already, that Rowan never became a bride. That scene from the back as she collapses amongst the rose petals in her wedding dress is as striking within the context of the scene as it is in the promo video. You want to dislike Tommy, but really – how can anyone hate Kevin Alejandro? Even when he played a bad guy in Arrow, we felt sorry for him. Lena is very troubled this whole episode, more so than anyone else. Julie and her creepy little boy are getting attached, but he is so Damien-like, plus..remember the end of Episode 1. This show is so good (so far). It’s got the right amount of the supernatural mixed in with believable reactions, and great acting.
Line of the episode from Camille to Peter: “So I guess you know I’m a zombie.”
“The Returned,” from executive producers Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “Bates Motel”) and Raelle Tucker (“True Blood”), focuses on a small town that is turned upside down when several local people, who have been long presumed dead suddenly reappear, bringing with them both positive and detrimental consequences. As families are reunited, the lives of those who were left behind are challenged on a physical and emotional level. Interpersonal relationships are examined with intrigue and depth as strange phenomena begin to occur. “The Returned” is based on the popular and International Emmy®-award winning French suspense series adapted by Fabrice Gobert and inspired by the feature film, Les Revenants, directed by Robin Campillo.
