HBO’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Will Spoil The Ending Of The Books

Game Of Thrones Season 5 Dean-Charles Chapman as Tommen Baratheon and Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister

If you’re a fan of Game Of Thrones and the novels by George R.R. Martin on which it is based, then you already know that the HBO series does at times deviate from the Song Of Ice and Fire books. Recently, Martin, who is also an executive producer and writer on the television series, revealed that characters will die in Season 5 who are still alive in his books — books which we know take him a long time to write. Book 6, The Winds of Winter, was originally due out this year, but now the release date is up in the air. With the TV show beginning its fifth season next month, it’s been obvious for a while now that it would eventually surpass the books, and now we have official confirmation.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss confirmed at a recent panel discussion at the Oxford Union that the television series will conclude before Martin’s final books are published.

This will, no doubt, come as a disappointment to those of us who are fans of the books who consider the novels to be canon, and would rather have the story first be told via Martin directly. But, since Martin is a co-executive producer on the show and writes one episode per season, he does have some say in the direction of the TV show. Foreseeing the issue of not having the final books to adapt, Benioff and Weiss state they’ve been talking with Martin about how they’ll end the HBO series. They’ve also stated before that they plan to go seven seasons.

Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on. . .and that’s what we’re going to do.

The duo have said in the past that they know the direction Martin is talking the books, which are schedule to conclude with a seventh installment, A Dream Of Spring; Over the years, fans have expressed concern that Martin might pass away before the final books are written, leaving behind a mystery as to how the series ends — especially when it comes to Jon Snow’s true birthright. In response to this, the showrunners have claimed in the past to know how it will all culminate.

You can watch the entire panel from Oxford University, which also included stars Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), here below.
