The long-awaited Mad Max: Fury Road finally released last week, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. While critically successful the movie didn’t dominate at the box office, finishing in second place domestically behind Pitch Perfect 2 its first weekend. It also had to deal with the juggernaut Avengers: Age of Ultron, which finished third in its third weekend of release and brought its grand total to $1.1 billion worldwide.
Despite the big time competition, Fury Road has still managed a strong $110 million worldwide so far—$3 million more than Pitch Perfect 2 currently has made thanks to better numbers in foreign markets—on its $150 million budget, so naturally fans will wonder whether or not there will be a sequel.
According to director George Miller, there will indeed be more movies, and he’s even shared the title of the next one. You can see what he had to say below.
Miller just joined the Twitter yesterday and only has two tweets so far: one where he promises more Max seen below and a “What a lovely day!” retweet:
As a guest on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast, Miller even shared what he’s planning to title the next entry in the franchise, Mad Max: The Wasteland.
Star Tom Hardy has also said that he’s signed on for three more Mad Max movies, so long as Fury Road performs well and Warner Brothers decides to move forward with the potential sequels.
Fury Road was in the works for many years, and even began filming way back in 2012. So if there is a sequel let’s hope it doesn’t take nearly as long to make it to our eyes. Miller has spoken of possibly shooting back-to-back movies in the past, which could be a possibility now that it’s been proven that there’s still a market for post-apocalyptic action flicks like this.
The one biggest key to all of this is of course Warner Brothers. At the moment nothing is official, and all of those interested in a sequel await that precious green light.
