Ridley Scott‘s adaptation of Andy Weir‘s The Martian, is probably one of the most anticipated films of the year. Based on a screenplay written by Drew Goddard, the film sees Matt Damon and a star-studded cast as a team of astronauts sent by NASA, on a mission to explore Mars. When a storm hits the red planet, the crew is forced to make an emergency escape, but Damon is accidentally left behind. Will he survive? Will NASA take responsibility for his death?
You’ll just have to find out by watching the trailer below.
It wouldn’t be much of a film if Damon died at that exact moment. Instead he survives, but with very limited resources, enough to last him 31 days. Not enough time for him, even if he managed to repair all systems. So, as he puts it in the trailer, he is going to “science the shit” out of those 31 days, researching how to make four years worth of food and plant life, on what was first thought to be an uninhabitable planet.
In the meantime, his crew made up of Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, and Aksel Hennie, discover his distress signal and make plans to mutiny, which comes at its own price if they fail. Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, and Chiwetel Ejiofor also star.
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
