Last week on The Strain, a new player is flexing his undead muscles in town – Quinlan (Rupert Penry-Jones). He’s only half-undead though. The other half is human, and he can walk in daylight. I’m unsure how that works, but there’s a lot I don’t know. Is he like Setrakian (David Bradley)? Palmer (Jonathan Hyde)? Is he the Master’s son by a human girl? Coco (Lizzie Brocheré) better watch out then. She and Palmer were about to… Quinlan’s backstory is revealed – he used to be a gladiator by choice. He is nicknamed “The Born,” and has vowed to destroy The Master (Jack Kesy – and who hasn’t?). Confronting The Master and Eichorst (Richard Sammel), with his partner Setrakian, he is innocuously thwarted by explosive-happy Fet (Kevin Durand). Nobody better be mad at my Vasiliy! He is already hurting because Nikki is back, and Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas) is confused. The choice is clear, Dutch! Fet is manly and sensitive and perfect!

The Strain 2.8 “Intruders” review: We are privy to the creepiest makeover ever, as Eichorst places a wig on Kelly Goodvampire’s (Natalie Brown) head, along with some makeup tips. This is how they are going to get Zach. Kelly looks pretty – twitchy, but pretty. It’s good enough though, to get her through the Red Hook checkpoint. That, and a stinger in the car behind her. Her and her little “feeler” children get in, and find Zach, who almost falls for it, until a piece of her face starts coming off. The parental showdown we’ve been waiting for happens in full swing, mirroring in death, how they struggled in life over Zach. Perhaps “mirrored” is not exactly the word, but you get it.

Palmer is playing with fire, goading Eichorst. And he’s really proving the proclaimed inexperience with women this episode, by stepping on Coco’s feelings a bunch this episode, after they’ve slept together.

Gus and Felix talk about God, or lack thereof. They tries to get the Gupta family to leave, but then Quinlan shows up to recruit Gus, knowing a lot about him. I agree. Why Gus? And how does he know everything about Gus? Is there a hive mind with the ancients, Gus’s old bosses? That part I didn’t get.

Setrakian: “Mr. Fet – get your head out of her skirt and back in the game.” He’s so awesome. That skirt does not appear in this episode. Setrakian and Fet should star in their own buddy cop movie. A comedy, where they don’t always operate within the law. The plot could be they break into a church to steal the Occido Lumen from a cardinal. Oh wait… They arrive too late to save said cardinal (Eichorst gets to him first), but in a score for the good guys, the dying cardinal tells Setrakian who has it, and Setrakian mercifully ends his life before he changes.

Eph is just so complex. Liquor for breakfast, lies for lunch, and saving a gun dealer from a bullet wound, in front of his son (whom he took sniper rifle shopping) for dinner. Not only that, but Zach assisted in the surgery. That actually bonded them a bit, thus proving no matter how they mess up, you always have love for your parents.

I don’t think this show is capable of a bad episode.

The Strain airs Sunday nights at 10pm ET on FX.

The Strain – Next On: Intruders

Eph must protect Zack against a surprise intruder into Red Hook. Gus convinces the Guptas to make a difficult choice. Fet and Setrakian set out to acquire the Lumen but discover they are not the only potential buyer.
