Zack Snyder Says ‘Batman v Superman’ Is ‘Man Of Steel 2’

Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice Henry Cavill Wayne Manor

In the past few weeks, director Zack Snyder confirmed rumors that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would focus more on Batman than Superman. He explained that to help establish the Dark Knight as a character who existed long before Superman saved the Earth, we would need to “understand where Batman is with everything.” Of course with Ben Affleck signed on for a trilogy of Batman films plus other Justice League projects, Superman fans are beginning to lose hope for a sequel to Man of Steel, especially since WB doesn’t have any real plans for Superman after Justice League.

But consider the newest report a strange sign of hope. Snyder has gone on record to clarify that BvS is in actuality Man of Steel 2. More on the story here below.

Snyder’s comments would seem to contradict what he has said in the past in regards to what BvS should be considered. Last week, he explained to The Daily Beast why there was going to be more Batman than Superman,

Only in that because it’s a different Batman than the Batman that was in the Chris Nolan movies, so we have a little bit more explaining to do—and you just had a whole Superman movie. But I think only in that way, because you need to understand where Batman is with everything. And that’s more toward the beginning, but it evens back out as it goes on.

If we were to think that BvS wasn’t Man of Steel 2, that would make sense. At the time, there was no Man of Steel 2 scheduled for release. And BvS wouldn’t be the only time we would see Affleck as Batman. A few months after BvS‘s release, the actor will reprise his role for Suicide Squad, which will help further establish him as a character and what he has been doing before and since the events of Man of Steel.

Now in an interview with Canoe, Snyder gives a rather interesting explanation as to why BvS should be considered Man of Steel 2,

I think in a way Batman v Superman is Man of Steel 2. Justice League is kind of the transcendent, knights-of-the-round-table of the story. It’d be interesting to think about what a standalone Superman movie might be.

With Man of Steel 2 nowhere on WB’s film release schedule, Snyder’s statement makes a bit of sense. But it also sounds as if a direct Superman sequel isn’t WB or DC’s highest priority, especially since they have to focus on Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Green Lantern Corps, The Flash, and Justice League.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theaters on March 26, 2016.
