Dead Alive meets Cannibal Corpse in Deathgasm, a headbanging, metal-thrashing horror film from the producers of Housebound and Starry Eyes.

Written and directed by Jason Lei Howden, Deathgasm stars Milo Cawthorne as Brodie, a misfit sent to live with his fundamentalist Christian aunt and uncle (Jodie Rimmer and Colin Moy) after his mother is institutionalized.

An outcast in a sea of jocks and cheerleaders, Brodie meets a kindred spirit in fellow metalhead Zakk (James Blake). Together they form a heavy metal band called DEATHGASM with their friends Dion (Sam Berkley) and Giles (Daniel Cresswell).

After failing to write a hit song, the bandmates discover that one of their idols, reclusive rocker Rikki Daggers (Stephen Ure), lives nearby. To aid the rockers in their journey, Daggers provides them with magical Satanic sheet music that summons an ancient evil entity known as Aeloth the Blind One. Now the boys, with the help of Brodie’s crush, Medina (Kimberley Crossman), must find a way to slay the evil they awakened with their rocking.

Deathgasm is an instant cult classic, an endlessly absurd flick that manages to be wildly entertaining and exceedingly gory in the same blood-spewing breath. A combination of Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste and 1986’s Trick or Treat, Howden’s film is a send-up of metalhead culture, horror movie tropes, and the woes of growing up as an outcast in a small town.

With impressive practical effects, clever scripting, and some terrific performances, Deathgasm is the most fun you’ll have with a horror film this year. If you’ve ever wanted to rock so fucking hard you unleash a demonic horde on your hometown, then this movie is for you. If you’ve ever wanted to thrash hell-monsters with an arsenal of sex toys in slow-motion or chop off a demon’s dick with a weed whacker, then Deathgasm is definitely for you.

It’s been a pretty fantastic year for the horror genre. From It Follows, Spring, and We Are Still Here to What We Do in the Shadows, Creep, and Deathgasm, there’s been something truly awesome for every subset of horror fan out there. It’s an exciting time to be a genre nerd; there’s enough crazy, weird shit for even the most hardcore horror nerd to feel included – and that’s a bloody beautiful thing.

Funny, vulgar, and surprisingly sweet, Deathgasm kicks wholesale ass. Paint your face in black and white, slap on some studded leather, and throw those devil horns up, because Jason Lei Howden has delivered the face-melting cinematic equivalent of a Ronnie James Dio concert.

After making its premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, Deathgasm comes to VOD and select theaters on October 2. For metalheads and horror-hounds in the Charlotte area, Deathgasm will be screening as part of Back Alley Film Series’ October programming. For tickets, visit the official BAFS website.
