Last week on The Bastard Executioner, Wilkin Brattle (Lee Jones) and Miles Corbett (Stephen Moyer) continued their mutual blackmail dance (although I think odds are in Corbett’s favor). “Our buried truths bind us.” Brattle continues to pose as the executioner, in order to bide his time and find all the culprits of his village’s massacre. He is finding it harder and harder to play this role, ending up pulling the fingernails off a young girl for info, then slicing off her nose as punishment. I understand that the snake visions are symbolic of evil or Wilkin’s situation, but I still haven’t connected the sorcery to this setting. And yet. I totally believe the supernatural stuff in Vikings because it belongs to myth. Lady Love Ventriss (Flora Spencer-Longhurst) is a big surprise – calm, just, wise – the antithesis of her now-dead husband and many of the nobles we get to know.

If you haven’t watched the episode yet, spoilers ahead!

The Bastard Executioner 1.4 “A Hunger / Newyn” review: Lady Love travels to King Edward II to learn the fate of Ventrishire. There, the boy-king and his foppy advisor keep her waiting to and fro. Then try to take her land away. She’s got another hand to deal. Watch closely. I honestly cannot believe that this quiet lady is becoming one of my faves. She’s not my type.

Wilkin is playing house quite nicely. It is only his fake wife that disturbs him. He is fond of the boy, and will soon fall in love with the baby, which makes us all fall in love with him more. She won’t shake the farce even in private. Petra appears in his dream and speaks of a future love which melts into Jessamy Maddox (Sarah Sweeney). But surely I can’t be imagining the chemistry between Wilkin and Lady Love? I thought maybe Jessamy was just method acting, but she is crazy – abusing her boy and saying it’s his father. Loony. I’m calling it now – she’s definitely dying soon.

Corbett is so wily! I thought he had a thing for Lady Love, but he is auctioning her off to ugly nobles! Then he starts trouble by outing Wilkin to someone. What is his deal? Brattle cannot even save his friends who are captured near Annora’s camp. Corbett just added more leverage to his pile. He forces Brattle once again to do something against his very being. Corbett out-thought me often this episode. I am delighted with Stephen Moyer’s evil performance.

There is gory torture this episode. I was shocked once again, cringing from the TV, at a “Holy s***! I did not expect that” violent scene. The quiet moments speak volumes. Ed Sheeran debuts as one of the torturers. You will get to see back skin pinned to a wall, so look forward to that.

Thumbs up, once again TBX. There are 6 episodes left and I am already missing it.

The Bastard Executioner airs Tuesday nights at 10pm ET on FX.
