NYCC 2015 gotham panel

The stars of FOX’s TV series Gotham appeared today at the Warner Bros. Television panel at this year’s New York Comic-Con, where star Robin Lord Taylor revealed who was joining the cast as his dad (Pee-Wee Herman!).

Below are some highlights from the panel’s Q&A with executive producer John Stephens, and stars Ben McKenzie (Jim Gordon), Michael Chiklis (Nathaniel Barnes), Cory Michael Smith (Ed Nygma), Erin Richards (Barbara Kean), Robin Lord Taylor (Penguin), Jessica Lucas (Tabitha Galavan), and James Frain (Theo Galavan).

Stephens spoke about how they decided to make the show fully serialized over 22 episodes, and tell the stories of how supervillains came to Gotham. McKenzie is morally compromised, and now he has a new boss, Captain Barnes, played by Chiklis. He’s a countermeasure to the villainy that is running amok. He’s a mentor to Jim and the end justifies the means law enforcement.

Q: Barnes gets Bullock to stand up. The police force is the worst job in America because they all die.
Chiklis: Until now.
Stephens: We want the show to feel dangerous. And want it to always have that feeling of surprise because Gotham is a dangerous place.

Q: Batshit Barbie. She’s amazing. How early did you know?
Richards: Pretty early on. The signs were there – the drinking and drug problem. It released her from all the shackles.

Q: Have you floated the idea, the need to fill that laughing space with a female joker type? [Everyone laughs]

Q: Robin, what’s coming up for him [Penguin]?
Lord Taylor: He’s the king of Gotham. All last season he knew how to play the game, go behind the scenes, manipulate people. His entire skill set was getting to that point. He is now going to be challenged to stay there. Biggest challenge he’s ever had to face in his entire life.

Q: Will you be working with other characters?
Lord Taylor: I think that is something you will see. I can say – Rise of the Villains is going to be interacting with each other more and more. Fun stuff is coming.

Stephens: Tell them.
Lord Taylor: We are all familiar with Oswald’s mother played by the fabulous, fabulous Carol Kane. We just found out that I do have a father, played by Paul Reubens! Pee-Wee Herman is my dad! And remember he was Penguin’s father in Batman Returns.

Q: Cory, now that he’s crazy. You get a little sexier because the guy in the mirror can get it.
Michael Smith: He was a good guy that was poisoned by the city. He did a good thing for her and himself. He has to confront these two sides of himself. The ricochet is something I organically do. It’s his id. Bad Nygma.

Q: This week, Nygma mans up…
Michael Smith: Yeah. No more silly riddle pants. He’s just gonna say go out with me.

Q: Have you seen his apartment yet?
Michael Smith: You will.

Q: Our two newest troublemakers… James can you tell us when will we find out what these two have against Gotham?
Frain: He’s actually a bad guy, which is a stretch for me. It’s new territory. My sister is a bit of a wild card. I’m something of an avenging angel. I mean to take on every major character and it’s going to get very dark indeed.
Lucas: James Frain in leather.

Chiklis: These people were brave enough to take on Barnes. He is pretty badass in his own right. This is gonna be a war.

Q: How has it been joining the previous cast?
Lucas: Welcoming. Everyone is passionate.
Frain: It feels like we are making a movie every week. Positive.
Chiklis: Everyone could not be more welcoming. It’s an incredibly well run set.

Q: Ben, so now that Jim in this questionable area, where do you see him headed?
McKenzie: Nowhere good. Take stock of where we were and where we wanna be. Each script that comes in builds on the previous one. Its very rewarding. For the fans really pay attentions there slittle nuggets. Gordon is going nowhere good.

Audience Q&A:

Q: Barbara talked about how her and Jim will be back together in a year. Is that even possible where Barbara is right now?
Richards: Just misunderstood.
McKenzie: There’s an attraction/repulsion that runs very deep. He feels responsible for the monster she has become. Could they find themselves in a non-adversarial relationship in the future.
Stephens: Episode 8 will feel epic. As it goes forward, never rule out that anyone can be redeemed or condemned.

Q: If the show were to hypothetically jump 10 years, where would you like to see your characters?
Stephens: 10 years might be where Bruce might be Batman.
Michael Smith: To jump ahead is to jump the scar tissue. It’s kind of skipping over the juiciest part.
Chiklis: Not dead.

Q: Will it be revealed what Jim did with the Penguin? Will Barnes find that out about Gordon. Will he be upset?
Ben: It will come to ahead. We’re coming after Penguin. He doesn’t know I have that relationship with him.

Q: What was it like to film that part where you met?
Michael Smith: I feel like it was a charged energy. Edward is clearly obsessed with Oswald.
Robin: I had a blast. One of my favorite scenes, was exciting to interact with the proto Riddler.

Q: Is the Joker coming back? He was the best one.
Stephens: No comment. If you watch the episodes closely, we probably have not seen the last of that fella.

Q: Who is your favorite villain?
Lord Taylor: Donald Trump

Paul Reubens will make his debut on Gotham during Season 2, which is currently underway. Episode 2.4, “Strike Force,” airs on Monday, October 12, 2015, and sees the addition of Michael Chiklis as Captain Nathaniel Barnes. Check back soon at Geeks Of Doom for our full review.
