Crytek's The Climb

Motion gaming was all set to be the next big thing a while back. But instead of getting the kinds of games we thought we were going to get, most of what we got was, well…crap, to put it bluntly, and it never took off like it was supposed to.

Now the NEXT big thing fast approaches: virtual reality! For years we’ve been seeing cool tech demos and videos of YouTube of people enjoying VR such as the Oculus Rift in various ways, but soon we’ll be seeing it go mainstream, with games developed solely for VR play. One such title is called The Climb, and it comes from developer Crytek, makers of the original Far Cry, the Crysis series, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Warface.

You can read more about the game and watch the first trailer below.

As I expect we’ll be seeing quite a lot, The Climb looks more like a simulator than an actual game, but it could be exciting to experience. One concern I have, as you’ll see in the announcement trailer below, is the notable absence of arms. I’ve never experience virtual reality for myself, maybe this is for a reason, but it doesn’t look appealing to me at all. If I’m going to drop big money on VR gaming, I’m going to want my VR body to have some arms. Sexy, well-toned arms, the likes of which make all others weep with jealousy! Too much? Fine. Just regular arms then.

Here’s the full press release on the game:

Feel the unrivaled adrenaline rush of free solo rock climbing and encounter the majesty of nature like never before in The Climb – a new virtual reality game from Crytek coming exclusively to Oculus.

The Climb invites thrill-seekers to experience the ultimate in extreme sports by going beyond the point of no return and scaling deadly cliff faces unaided. The game boasts hyper-realistic climbing locations from around the world, and players will discover the freedom of gaming with the Rift using either an Xbox One controller or Oculus Touch controllers as they soak up their awe-inspiring surroundings.

Oculus Head of Worldwide Studios, Jason Rubin, said: “Crytek is renowned for leveraging their CRYENGINE tech to create beautiful, immersive games. Their early VR demos really captured public imagination, and to see their ideas come to life with Rift is incredible and not to be missed. The Climb is a beautiful combination of art and thrill that’s bringing an entirely new level of adventure gaming to Rift.”

Also commenting on the collaboration, Founder, CEO & President of Crytek, Cevat Yerli, said: “Gaming has always given us the opportunity to place ourselves in otherwise impossible scenarios, and VR technology such as the Rift makes us feel present in those scenarios like never before. The Climb invites players to experience the intensity of one of the world’s most dangerous sports, and they’ll truly feel the thrill of being thousands of meters above the ground with nothing but their skill and a few precarious handholds to rely on.”

As you probably noticed, the game is coming exclusively to the Oculus Rift. This could be an early indication of motion gaming-type troubled waters ahead. It’s already REALLY expensive to be a gamer. If you’re into all kinds of different games, it’s nearly impossible to play them all without owning a PC and the latest Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii, thanks to exclusives, console limitations, and so on. That’s many thousands of dollars most people already do not have readily available. Exclusive games are nothing new, but it’s very, very unlikely that more than a few people are going to purchase more than one VR system to play games on, so when you already see games like this being released on only one of them, it’s a bad sign.

Sony also has their own VR system coming out called PlayStation VR, which will of course have its own exclusive games. They recently tried to present what some of these games are looking like at their PlayStation Experience 2015 and the results were, for the most part, not good at all (seen here from 1:14:54 to 1:33:55).

Hopefully these are just early speedbumps, and VR gaming can be as exciting as many hope it will be.

What do you think about The Climb?
