One of Syfy’s most promising new shows, The Magicians, has released its 1st episode in anticipation of the television premiere of the first 2 episodes Monday night, January 25th, at 9:00pm and 10:10pm ET respectively. I would venture to describe it as “Hogwarts meets Narnia meets Sex meets hipsters.” You’ll get it.

Watch the entire 1st episode, “Unauthorized Magic” below.

I am always willing to check out new shows, although my heart has been broken (especially by you Syfy! Dominion forever!), and this premise, although seeming a bit familiar (magic school, another realm traveled to via furniture), it is much darker and has the sexual aspect thrown in.

The Magicians is about a miserable young man, Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) who thinks he’s going psycho at times, who is recruited to take a test at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. His best friend doesn’t get in, but she is recruited by a rival magic entity. There’s also a magical story realm which is actually real. He meets some other magical misfits.

Here’s some stuff I liked:

– The differences between the real world and the magic world separated by doors. The visuals are fantastic.

– It’s scary and gross.

– Realms within realms, and the different magic factions mean lots of crazy possibilities.

– The magic cliques.

Take a gander at the episode. Let us know if you think we should keep watching.

The Magicians Episode 1 airs Monday, January 25th at 9:00pm ET and Episode 2 “The Source of Magic” airs at 10:10pm ET on Syfy.
