Last week on Gotham, Jim (Ben McKenzie) was legally cleared from suspicion for the murder of Theo Galavan (James Frain), but not in the minds of Barnes and Dent (Michael Chiklis and Nicholas D’Agosto). Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) was caught and thrown in Arkham, (but didn’t give up Jim), and met Dr. Hugo Strange (BD Wong), whose very voice seems to make people do things to themselves and go crazier. We met Victor and Nora Fries (Guest stars Nathan Darrow and Kristen Hager), the latter dying of an incurable ailment, her husband desperate to save her. He was trying to perfect a cryogenic method to freeze her to stop the progression of the disease, but kept getting snagged on the unfreezing part. After freezing a bunch of people, they found his lair, bringing Nora in. Just as Victor was about to turn himself in, one of his dead came back to life, renewing his purpose.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 2.13 “A Dead Man Feels No Cold” review: Lee went to see Bruce because Alfred was worried. Bruce is candid, “I wasn’t scared. I felt alive… intensely alive.” Bruce is training. Alfred (Sean Pertwee) asks, “Are we in this together or not?”

Bruce: “We find him. We make him talk. You kill him.” But when Selina (Camren Bicondova) visits Bruce, he wants her to get him a gun. She doesn’t want to. Obviously, he’s not waiting for Alfred.

Sean Pertwee should really be playing Alfred in Batman v Superman. I love Jeremy Irons and all, but Pertwee is spot on.

Jim and the GCPD converge on ACE Chemicals (sound familiar?) where Victor Fries was spotted, after empty cop cars lay silent. Everyone is dead. “Free my wife,” are the chilling words.

Barnes flips the F*** out and orders Nora to Arkham. Lee (Morena Baccharin) is livid at Nora being used as bait. She insists on going with her. But Fries knows it’s a trap. He froze the river. Cool.

Penguin is not enjoying his time at Arkham. He refuses “to be a part of his program.” Not an option. They stick a helmet on him, shock him, and he’s crazier than ever. When Harvey (Donal Logue) and Jim arrive, they see Penguin acting weird (weirder than usual). Later Penguin shouts that Jim owes him with Strange secretly watching.

Lee and Nora get set up in the same room as Coma Barbie (I mean Barbara – Erin Richards). Nora tries to convince Lee that Victor is not evil. Lee totally understands. “You close your eyes to the truth.”

Of course, Fries breaks in via a different path. He really is the most dangerous villain in Gotham ever. Who can stop him and his freeze gun? He takes Lee to help his wife, right under Jim’s nose.

Dr. Strange plays games with the gates and makes a deal with Fries. A cartridge for safe passage. BD Wong is so perfect in this role, with his smarmy paced talking, almost like Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller from DC’s LoT). That combined with just how many villains he’s got cooking in the pods, has me shivering with antip…ation. I bet that’s where Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett-Smith) is.

Nora and Victor say their goodbyes, and he freezes her. But she switched the cartridges and cracked apart. Victor froze himself in despair. You know what that means – Indian Hill, and we glimpse a special project. Wait until you see who that is! I had to rewind and watch that reveal twice!

This was a love story, one that Lee was envious of. She knows he lied. I’m really curious how this romance will turn out. Will he eventually go back to Barbara? Stay with Lee? Will one or both of them die?

Another solid episode.
