Last week on Once Upon A Time, Dorothy was saved from Zelena’s (Rebecca Mader) sleeping curse with true love’s kiss from Ruby (Meghan Ory), and it was beautiful. I was really proud of the show from not shying away from a possible controversial storyline, where traditional fairy tales do not normally tread. The romantic tension between the two were apparent, as was their obvious struggle with their feelings. We saw Zelena really start to change by giving up the ruby slippers to Regina (Lana Parilla), and agreeing to help Belle (Emilie de Ravin). The help was the sleeping curse.
Once Upon A Time 5.19 “Sisters” review: Zelena and Hades (Greg Germann) are on a picnic. Very cute. He put everyone’s name on a tombstone, so he can to take her to the real Storybrooke and leave everyone else behind. “Will you make chaos with me?” When Zelena gets home from her “date,” Regina is waiting up for her, having spied the whole thing in a mirror. Zelena won’t listen. There’s only one solution… Cora (Barbara Hershey). Regina saves her mother from her eternal milling. Cora has the answer, as she always does.
Flashback to Regina’s childhood. Mother-of-the-year Cora gives her some sad, bitter advice about depending on no one but yourself. Regina played with her wand and passed out. Does anyone else notice the resemblance between little Evil Queen and little Snow White? There’s only one solution… Zelena. Cora goes to Zelena to help Regina.
James confronts David (both Josh Dallas), jealous that David got all the glory. Aw man… he switched places with him. I was about to be upset about this, but Emma is only fooled for the 5 minutes he kept the ruse up. Cruella (Victoria Smurfit) shows up, and they spit out the plan to take Robin and Zelena’s baby as leverage for their ride outta hell.
Cora finally does some good and makes the girls remember a time they loved each other. Can Cora get to heaven based on a rousing speech after killing all those people? Yep. Cora moves on. That part is a little unbelievable, but it does bring the sisters together. Regina lets Zelena go to Hades, trusting her.
“I don’t want to set the wooorldddd on firrrre.” Their song is perfect for them. Hades waits for her having set up a beautiful date. I feel bad. She really does deserve happiness and he seems to really love her. I do keep expecting him to betray her and everyone. He has not been on the show long enough to have that bad boy turned good journey be believable.
Zelena doesn’t make it there. Gold (Robert Carlyle) steals her with the help of his father, Peter Pan (Robbie Kay – whom I adore). He’s pretty pissed that she gave Belle the sleeping curse.
This episode had me up and down. I am really enjoying Zelena’s emotional journey. However, I don’t want her to tie confidence with wickedness. I don’t know how she can get her happy ending, because I’m not sure Hades has it in him. I was pleased with Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) getting a little play this episode, that was more than just sidekick boyfriend. Then again, Jennifer Morrison is not getting too much screen time either. I still love this different realm our heroes and villains have occupied, and cannot wait to see what world is next.
Once Upon A Time airs Sunday nights at 8:00pm ET on ABC.
