David Fincher Reportedly Still Interested In Directing ‘World War Z 2’

One of the major reasons why Paramount was forced to pull World War Z 2 off its release schedule, was because the film never went into production in the first place. The sequel to the sleeper hit could never lock down a director, thus stalling the film, which eventually led up to what happened earlier this week.

After director J.A. Bayona departed from the film, Se7en, Fight Club, and Gone Girl director David Fincher was named as a possible replacement. He’s worked with Brad Pitt twice before, so the idea makes plenty of sense. Well, it looks like Fincher is still very much interested in the gig. Find out more on the story below.

A source tells The Hollywood Reporter that Fincher is still “very creatively interested in directing the movie.” The problem is that Paramount is still hesitating to put the film into production, and the longer they put it off, the more it hurts the film’s franchise potential. Basically, it’s all up to the studio.

While most sequels tend to have bigger budgets, Fincher’s vision for World War Z 2 includes a budget less than the original’s $190 million. Even Paramount’s frequent collaborating partner, Skydance Productions, would pitch in for some of the production cost to mitigate the financial risk. The two have partnered up for films like Mission: Impossible and Star Trek. So they do have a history.

As for what the sequel cold be about, Fincher is looking to make a deeper more emotionally charged zombie flick that centers on a man and his family navigating a zombie apocalypse. The filmmaker was on board directing the project when he was first approached about it by writer Dennis Kelly, the creator of the original Utopia. In fact, Fincher was working with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn on the American remake of Utopia before it all fell apart.

This wouldn’t be the first time that World War Z has experienced production problems. During the production for the first film, the screenplay went through a handful of rewrites and reshoots. Still, Paramount is eyeing a 2018 or 2019 release, so there is still some time to find a director or get Fincher on board to helm the sequel. We’ll just have to wait and see where all of this goes from here.
