‘The Matrix’ Reboot Being Developed By Warner Bros.

The Matrix

It’s being reported that Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a reboot of the sci-fi classic The Matrix. What exactly this means is unknown at the moment. It could be a new take on the story we’ve already seen unfold in the original trilogy, which consisted of the aforementioned classic original and its not so memorable sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Or perhaps it will be a new movie beginning a new story set in the same universe.

WB already has a writer working on the project and a star in mind, too. Zak Penn, whose credits include X-Men 2, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Ready Player One, and creating the TV series Alphas, has been hired to write a treatment for the reboot. While Creed and Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan is being looked at as a potential star, though the report states that it’s still very early in the process and there’s a lot of work to do first.

Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski, who wrote and directed the original Matrix trilogy, are not involved in the reboot at the moment. Star Keanu Reeves has said in the past that he’d be willing to play Neo once again so long as the Wachowskis were writing and directing again, but it’s expected that a new director will be sought out, which is supported by Warner Bros. hiring Penn to write a treatment and looking at Jordan as a potential star.

The Matrix was released exactly 18 years ago in just a couple of weeks. It cost a little over $60 million to produce, and went on to an impressive $463.5 million worldwide box office run, making it one of the highest grossing R-rated movies of all time. Its sequel, The Matrix Reloaded, would later pass it and still sits in fourth place on the all-time R-rated list behind only American Sniper, Deadpool, and The Passion of the Christ.

  1. I’ll take a story set in the same universe, but if it’s a full-on reboot, I hope it fails miserably.
