Whether or not Quentin Tarantino is telling us the truth about his retirement he’s been pondering after his tenth film remains to be seen, but if it is true, we’re going to have to enjoy every last minute of it because he has just announced what his ninth film will be about.

For his “penultimate” film, Tarantino has decided that it will focus on the Manson family murders. Quite a subject, and one that will probably have another unique take. Check out more about the film, below.

The Hollywood Reporter says Tarantino has spoken to Brad Pitt (who he worked with on Inglourious Basterds), Jennifer Lawrence, and Margot Robbie. The director has a tendency to work with actors at least more than once, so it should be interesting to see who else he is looking at. According to the report, Tarantino is nearing finishing the script, and shooting is projected to begin as early as next summer.

Since the project is still in the very early stages it’s not clear who will distribute the film. But Harvey and Bob Weinstein are back on board as producers of the film, which shouldn’t be a huge surprise considering they have been for the past few.

While we’ve seen Tarantino take on history before, we’ve never really seen him take on a real-life subject matter like the Manson family murders. So it’s a bit of a sidestep for the director, but one that should be entertaining to watch, if you are a fan of the director.

However, Deadline says the film could be about Sharon Tate. Their report says that Robbie is currently being eyed for the role. Tate, who was eight-months pregnant at the time, was one of the five who were murdered by Manson and his followers at Tate’s husband Roman Polanski’s house.

Deadline also says Samuel L. Jackson is in talks for the lead role. Jackson has been a frequent presence of Tarantino films, so it’s really no surprise we are seeing his name in the mix. He’s been both an on-screen character and a narrator for seven of Tarantino’s nine films.

Again, this is still in the very early stages of development. And it’s not clear if Tarantino will stay faithful to the horrific true-life story. Studios could be receiving a package about the project as early as Labor Day. In fact, the project is so secretive that WME, the agency who will be sending the package, isn’t commenting.

Robbie is set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, which is reportedly looking at The Shallow‘s Jaume Collet-Serra to direct, as well as Gotham City Sirens with David Ayer.
