Star Wars The Last Jedi Kylo Ren

We are less than a month away from the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and you can be sure that fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what will happen to Rey (Daisy Ridley) and if this will truly be the end for the Jedi Order. While the teaser, trailer, and a few TV spots have given us an exciting look at the action, they’ve kept fans in the dark when it comes to releasing major plot points and major surprises.

Of course, nearly every Star Wars film is one of the most anticipated films of the year, wanting to know more about it before its release is just par for the course. And now, we will get to know a little more about the upcoming sequel with a handful of new images that detail these characters’ journeys towards their destiny. Check out the gallery and a few tidbits about the film in the full story here below.

EW was the first to release the images, along with exclusive covers, and some story bits.

As you can see on the covers, there are two characters each, all of which will hint at some of the dynamics between the two. One teases a reunion of sorts for siblings Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), with the former having exiled himself after he failed to keep Ben Solo (Adam Driver) from turning over to the Dark Side that turned him into Kylo Ren. Then there’s the Kylo Ren and Rey cover. We’ve seen those two at odds before with Rey overcoming Kylo twice in The Force Awakens. Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) along with the droid BB-8 also grace a cover, as they are assigned a mission to infiltrate The First Order. And finally, there’s Laura Dern‘s Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo and Oscar Isaac‘s Poe Dameron, as the two will appear to have different approaches to finally resolving the ongoing conflict between The Resistance and The First Order.

Obviously, it’s important to give these characters a chance to contribute in their own way by giving them plots of their own. But at the heart of almost every Star Wars film is that conflict between the light and the darkness, which is why having Rey and Kylo together on the same cover is so important.

Though Kylo has had some training in the ways of the Force and the Dark Side, Rey has yet to learn any of it. Her raw talent can only get her so far, which is why she reaches out to Luke for help. But when Rey does finally meet Luke, he is reluctant to accept the lightsaber and even turns his back on her in her moment of need, which is something Kylo can relate to.

Before he became Kylo Ren, Ben Solo was one of Luke’s students. He learned the ways of the Force, but somehow, Snoke got to him, and when Ben made that transition to the Dark Side, Luke felt that he wasn’t there for his nephew’s time of need. And as a result his failure leads to a self-exile.

And even though those two find themselves on opposite sides of the Force, they do have those parallels of rejection. Here’s how direction Rian Johnson looks at it:

“This is very much about Rey trying to figure out how she fits into all this, much like any of us as we’re growing up, as we’re transitioning from childhood into adulthood,” Johnson says. “You’re going meet people who you think are going help who don’t. And help is also going come from unexpected places.”

So that may be why we see Rey reach out to Kylo in the trailer – or at least that’s the way it was made to look. That could even be her in the image below with her back against a blurry person, who presumably is Kylo. We don’t know, it’s all just speculation. But since they do have similarities, despite their differences, it’s easy to see why their stories are intertwined.

Despite their conflict, it seems that one of them could compel the other to join their side.

As for the images, we see that Finn and Rose aren’t dressed appropriately for Canto Bight, the high-class galactic casino we have been hearing so much about. In another image, we see Luke watch over Rey’s training. However, don’t expect to see the same kind of old man teaches a younger student training session that we saw in A New Hope. Hamill says his broken character is exactly why he is so reluctant to take Rey on as a student.

Other photos detail character’s motivations, including General Leia possibly making Poe the new leader of The Resistance, and Kylo doubting himself and his place within The First Order.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on December 15, 2017.
