Don’t Worry, ‘Deadpool’ Will Still Be Rated R

Deadpool 2 Teaser: Ryan Reynolds As Bob Ross

Yes, Disney has bought 21st Century Fox. So most of their entertainment assets will belong to the mouse. That means that X-Men and Fantastic Four can now play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s sandbox. Whether or not they will remains to be seen.

But for those who were worried that Disney would tone down some of the more adult comic movies such as Deadpool, you can relax. Disney CEO Bob Iger says he intends to keep Deadpool as an R-rated movie. More on what he had to say about that and the future of rated-R Marvel movies below.

THR posted a story on Iger’s call to investors. In it, the CEO suggested that there could be an opportunity to have more Marvel films that are rated-R:

“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”

Obviously having more mature content will prove that Disney will not be interfering with what their other entities are doing, at least to a certain extent. The studio pretty much leaves Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm to do their own thing, which is why those films have been working so well, as opposed to other studios which have complete oversight, which has ended up with mixed results.

Although, it should be interesting to see if Disney can bring X-Men and Fantastic Four into the fold now that they own those titles. As of now, there seem to be no plans to make that happen. Especially since there are still X-Men films in the works, like the sequel Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. And no word yet on what will happen to that standalone Doctor Doom film from Fargo‘s Noah Hawley.

More and more details of this merger will come out. And things may not be so bad. Many worried about Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm being Disneyfied. Of course, none of that happened. And I don’t think Iger would be willing to do that now. There is some speculation that Fox would stay as is, and be Disney’s means of releasing adult-friendly material. Though, that has yet to be seen. So for now, don’t expect Deadpool to be PG-13 anytime soon, because Iger wants to keep it R.

We will keep you up to date as more news on this merger comes out.
