WWE Star John Cena In Talks To Star In ‘Duke Nukem’ Movie

Duke Nukem

WWE star John Cena is currently in negotiations to star in a movie based on the Duke Nukem video game series.

The planned movie comes from Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form‘s Platinum Dunes, which is best known for producing horror remakes like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, as well as the Purge and Ouija movies, the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie franchise reboot, and the upcoming A Quiet Place.

The game series began back in 1991, and many different styles of games have been released since then including 2D sidescroller/platformer type games, third-person action games, and first-person shooters. Duke Nukem is a brash, cocky amalgamation of various action movie characters, who’s usually slaughtering aliens or mutant pig cops among other enemies, or hanging out at a strip club.

A movie based on the games has been talked about since the ’90s, but nothing has ever come of it. The games aren’t exactly family friendly, so it will be interesting to see if the plan is to be faithful to the source material or to opt for a more marketable approach at the risk of upsetting fans of the games.

Though best known for his work wrestling for WWE, Cena is no stranger to the movies. He’s starred in The Marine, 12 Rounds, Legendary, Trainwreck, Daddy’s Home and its sequel, The Wall, and as the title character in the recent animated flick Ferdinand, which just scored an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. He can next be seen in the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, as well as the comedy Blockers.

No writer or director has been attached to this latest attempt at a Duke Nukem movie, and no release window has been announced just yet.
