The Killing Joke

The history of the Joker is never told the same way, but there is one arc fans refer to as the definitive backstory for the Clown Prince of Crime, Batman: The Killing Joke. So it should come as no surprise that director Todd Philips would want to look at it for his Joker origins film.

A new report says Phillips will be drawing some inspiration from The Killing Joke, in which a failed comedian falls into a vat of acid bleaching his skin and warping his mind, for the still untitled Joker origins film. More on the story below.

According to The Wrap, the film will portray Batman’s arch-nemesis as a failed 1980s comedian who transforms into the evil clown after crashing and burning with audiences. So basically, The Killing Joke.

We should remind everyone that this film has nothing to do with whatever is going on in the DCEU, such as Suicide Squad 2 or the Joker and Harley Quinn film with Jared Leto reprising his role as the Batman villain. The goal of this is to expand the DC universe with new and unique storylines that aren’t a part of the current DCEU. By doing this, they had to look at new actors to play the iconic roles. In this instance, producers are currently in talks with Joaquin Phoenix, who would play Gotham’s most notorious villain. Based on previous reports, Phillips has already met with Phoenix, and is now just waiting for the green light from the studio.

Written by Alan Moore, 1988’s The Killing Joke provides an origin story for the Joker. In it, an engineer quits his job to become a stand-up comedian, only to fail miserably. In an attempt to provide for his pregnant wife, he lets two criminals into the chemical plant where he used to work. Unfortunately, this goes south, and he ends up falling into a vat of acid, which causes his skin to turn chalk-white, stains his lips ruby-red, and dyes his hair bright green. The experience plus the loss of his family drives him insane, and thus the Joker is born.

The studio is looking to start filming later this year. However, that date could be pushed back as 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver is currently penning the rewrite.

It’s beginning to look like this dark and gritty take on the Joker is actually going to happen. Most, if not all of us, were confused by the announcement itself. The film is said to be more of a “gritty hard-boiled crime drama than a traditional comic book movie,” and is said to draw inspiration from Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The King of Comedy director Martin Scorsese. Which is probably explains why Scorsese executive producing the project.

No word yet on when the film could be released, but we will keep you posted.
