The Spy Who Dumped Me

Spoofing the spy genre isn’t something that is particularly new. But that doesn’t make it any less funny. Especially when you get some great talent like Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis. The two will be paired up in the new spy comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me – get it, it’s a riff on the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me.

Lionsgate has dropped the first trailer for the film. In it, Audrey (Kunis) and Morgan (McKinnon) are two best friends who get wrapped up in an international conspiracy when Audrey finds out that her former boyfriend is actually a spy. Check out the trailer below.

There are some pretty decent trailer moments that made me chuckle, though I suspect they are holding out on the best parts of the film. It’s actually pretty funny to see how Kunis and McKinnon try to cope with driving a stick as they outrun their pursuers. There are even some nods to the typical spy tropes, like swallowing a flash drive, driving fast cars, and killing people – because what’s a good spy movie without some death. But it’s the Minion bit at the end of the trailer that will probably have you laughing.

It seems fitting that the comedy will be rolled out towards the end of the summer blockbuster season. August has been known to produce some very surprising films, and The Spy Who Dumped Me could be one of them.

The film is directed by Susanna Fogel, and also stars Justin Theroux, Gillian Anderson, Sam Heughan, Hasan Minhaj, and Ivanna Sakhno.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

The film tells the story of Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon), thirty-year-old best friends from Los Angeles, who are unexpectedly thrust into an international conspiracy when Audrey’s ex-boyfriend (Justin Theroux) shows up at her apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail. Much to their own surprise, the duo jump into action, and find themselves on the run in Europe from the assassins and a suspiciously charming British agent (Sam Heughan), as they hatch a plan to save the world.

The Spy Who Dumped Me opens on August 3, 2018.
