Captain Marvel

Disney has released the first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film stars Brie Larson as the title character who leaves Earth to join an intergalactic organization known as Starforce. But when she returns, she questions her past. Upon her return, she finds out that she must fight the shape-shifting Skrulls, led by their leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), whose goal is to invade Earth.

After seeing the first images from Marvel Studios’ 21st film, we are now getting our first look at footage. Check out the first trailer for Captain Marvel below along with a new poster.

Last week, we learned that Carol Danvers (Larson) is a half-human and half-Kree who leaves Earth to join Starforce, a Kree military force led by an enigmatic commander played by Jude Law. However, when she returns she finds herself questioning her past. But her existential crisis is just one battle Danvers will have to deal with, as Talos, a Skrull commander, arrives on Earth under the disguise of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with plans to invade Earth.

Captain Marvel will take place during the ’90s, so you can expect to see a few nostalgic things like a Blockbuster Video, references to Nine Inch Nails, and a young two-eyed Nick Fury, who has not met either Captain America or Iron Man. Remember, Fury was the one who sent out the distress signal to Captain Marvel towards the end of Avengers: Infinity War. And it’s funny to hear him say things like “space invasion” and “big car chase” as if he knew he was going to experience them in the future.

But Danvers’ return to Earth may not be so simple as first thought. “So you’re not from around here,” Fury says to Danvers. “It’s hard to explain,” Danvers replies. We then see a montage of scenes of Danvers’ life on Earth as a young girl and a hotshot pilot. Only thing is, she is unsure if any of that was real. “I keep having these memories. I see flashes. I think I have a life here. But I can’t tell if it’s real.” During that montage, we then see Danvers suspended upside down as she is tied down to some sort of alien device.

“We can’t do this alone. We need you.” Fury say, presumably to Danvers. In this shot we see the title character revealing that the character will don the mask that she wears in the comics. This was followed by a shot of her standing in front of an alien ship taking the full brunt of an explosion. I guess this is where the Green Lantern reference comes in.

“I’m not what you think I am,” says Captain Marvel as the trailer then closes out with different generations of her character rising up from a fall, in quick succession, before ending on the title character, in the red, blue and gold suit, charging up for an attack.”

Clark Gregg also returns to reprise his role as Agent Coulson. Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou also return to reprise the roles as Ronan and Korath, respectively.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel also stars Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, and Mckenna Grace. The film opens in theaters on March 8, 2019.
