Bird Box trailer header

Netflix has released the first trailer for Bird Box from director Susanne Bier (The Night Manager), an apocalyptic thriller starring Sandra Bullock.

In the film, the world is coming to an end. But there are no zombies. No apes. Not even a flu. But there are aliens. Just not the kind you’d expect to see. This time, these aliens manifest themselves into the onlooker’s greatest fear. And it gets to a point when the person kills themselves. So the only way to survive is to have blindfolds on so you don’t see them. All of that makes for a very interesting take on character survival. Check out the trailer below.

While the trailer clearly shows that Bullock has managed to survive these events, from her pregnancy up until her children’s early years, there is a force that drive her out from the safe confines of her home. And in order to find a new refuge, she will have to guide herself and her children through rough terrain and torrential rivers, blindfolded. On top of all of that, she has to keep her children close to her. It doesn’t look easy. And without that sight, you may never know what’s coming. Making that all the more terrifying. Taking away one’s sense in a film like this does resemble something like A Quiet Place.

Bird Box is actually based on a novel written by Josh Malerman. The film also stars Trevante Rhodes, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Danielle Macdonald, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, Colson Baker, BD Wong, Sarah Paulson, and John Malkovich. Based on the trailer and just how these films go, there’s a very good chance that only Bullock will survive the whole ordeal.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they’ll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded.

Bird Box hits Netflix on December 21, 2018.
